The Generational Leadership Equation - Speak less, communicate more
I've always been good at connecting with people, so it must come easy right? Nope. But by 2008 I already had a mentor's wisdom in my life for over 30 years, and that level of support and guidance is priceless.
Until her death in 2008 at the ripe old age of 107 Harriet, my Grand mother, matriarch and communication "spirit guide" was always on hand with great stories, emotional support and crucially an unending belief in the power of human connection.
A great listener, she taught me the power of shutting up and listening, and importantly to really HEAR.
I'm not wired that way though - I speak first a lot, often too much when I should really be listening. Sound familiar? If you are an older line leader or senior manager and you are struggling to connect with your junior members of staff, ask yourself - "Am I really listening"?
The shift is slight but crikey it's significant. Harriets words ring in my ears…:"How can you change anything if you aren't willing to listen to start with?" It makes a difference not only to your action going forward, but crucially to how you show-up for you team. Trust me, they'll thank you for it.
Now I am fortunate enough to share this wisdom and more when I speak at event and within businesses, because ultimately if we all want to be better leaders - It starts with listening.
