This week I'm sharing one of the most powerful tools I've ever used in business and in life — the One Page Strategic Plan from Verne Harnish's book, Mastering the Rockefeller Habits.
I first came across this plan when I was running my construction business, and I used it to map out five big dreams I wanted to achieve over 20 years. I knocked eight years off that timeline. Yes — I beat my own plan.
The magic of this plan is in its simplicity and its structure. You start with your purpose, values, and Big Hairy Audacious Goal (your dream), and then you work backwards — asking yourself what you need to achieve in 10–20 years, then 3–5 years, then 12 months, and finally what do you need to do in the next 90 days?
Think of it as your treasure map. There will always be pirates — people, circumstances, and distractions trying to steal your dreams — but when you have the map, you can navigate around them and get back on course.
Key Takeaways:
Dreams without a plan are just wishes — you need a roadmap
Work backwards from your big goal to find your next 90-day actions
Your quarterly priorities are what keep you on track
When life knocks you off course, the plan gets you back on it fast
Think big, dream big, believe big — and the results will be big
