Skyler House, completed this year.
Thanks to for featuring the project.

“In East London’s Hackney, a modest 1950s ground-floor flat has quietly been reborn as a residence of light, openness and architectural generosity. Redesigned by London-based architecture firm , the ground-floor home, Skyler House, dismantles rigid post-war spatial logic to reveal something more expansive, poetic and alive.

Walls that once draped the plan in gloom are removed. Accessways are widened; new windows and garden-facing doors invite air and life inside. A hatch between kitchen and workspace collapses boundaries between function and domestic ritual, while a custom-built pull-down bed and built-in fireplace turn compactness into clever versatility.

The London flat becomes a stage for subtle design interventions aimed at delight and discovery: handcrafted furniture dyed by its occupants, plywood surfaces enlivened by colour, corners turned into everything from cosy reading benches to pet-friendly thresholds”.

Custom kitchen island, designed and templated to integrate with new structural elements. Large deep drawers on one side and and oversailing counter on the other. A centerpiece to navigate around, tying in with the joinery and reflecting light from the garden doors.

Making of photo at the end.

Thanks to for the engineering
and to .thompson for capturing it so beautifully

Skyler House

Structure and infrastructure followed by craft is often a point of departure; how can the omission of load-bearing and non-load-bearing elements be used to bring interest and complexity in a building, and how can doing so be a source of joy and use.

Skyler House

Removing a wall, widening an opening, forming another and lowering a window - this should be enough. A play of diagonals and light across an orthographic plan; long channels of activity and thresholds - much more than would be expected. Small phenomena of light and warmth that circle across the house from dawn to dusk.

Thank you to Wallpaper* for featuring the project today and to for the write up.

1880 THAT

ATTENTION
Two giant arms, coloured red like an alert, gesture for attention, one pointing towards the Houses of Parliament and other to Milan, where the conference the exhibition derives its names from took place in 1880, both signaling places where decisions are made for the masses.
The arms slowly inflate and deflate, rubbing against the gallery wall, creating an indentation, symbolizing the ongoing need to advocate for Deaf rights and inclusion. When the arm is deflated it represents the exhaustion of constantly needing to do this.

1880 THAT

‘NOT CROSS’ a red brick wall 11m long that disrupts the perpendicular walls of the gallery with I AM NOT CROSS written in capital letters 3m high speaks about the dissonance been what is being communicated and how, highlighting the limits of emotion in writing and the importance of body language and facial expressions which are key grammatical factors in sign language.

The level of intensity of a facial expression can often mean a world of difference to what is being expressed. Skilled sign language speakers can detect even the slightest inflection. Talking to a person who is not as skilled can lead to frustration and feel like talking to the proverbial brick wall.

1880 THAT

Three open timber frame enclosures make a winding route in the gallery, with the third a darkened 6.8m diameter semi-circular space creating a swooping projection room showing ‘What’s Left’. The film reimagines scenes from Sesame Street, the first mainstream TV show to incorporate sign language.

Lefty the Salesman, tries to sell a series of items to Ernie, including an invisible ice cream cone, some air, a notebook and an empty box.

This curtain acts as a veil over a new mirror, and straddles the window, softening the connection to the estate beyond.
