For March’s social, Matthew Schloms, our Talent Acquisition Manager, hosted a blind Kombucha tasting for the Cape Town office. This trendy drink, closely aligned with what we do, put everyone's taste buds to the test!

What seemed like a simple challenge turned out to be surprisingly tricky, with participants struggling to pinpoint the exact flavors—especially those with multiple ingredients. It was a fun and flavorful test of palate precision!

During the month of March, Black Swan celebrated International Women’s Day with activities focused on celebrating, sharing stories, and empowering women.

A key highlight was a panel discussion hosted at our All Company meeting the Weekly Swan, where our very inspiring female Swans shared career insights and perspectives on workplace challenges, social media, and allyship.

Swans across our various hubs marked the occasion with gatherings, including a delicious high tea and breakfast.

A reflective initiative invited employees to write messages to their younger selves, adding a personal touch to the celebrations 🌸

We had a fantastic Lunch and Learn session at the SA office to celebrate and gain insights into the Chinese New Year. Our very own Swan, Eva delivered an engaging talk, followed by a creative Chinese lantern - making activity. We also enjoyed a delicious spread of traditional Chinese cuisine for lunch. 🐍

Last week our team in South Africa 🇿🇦 ended the year with a ‘Safari Chic’ party.

The festivities begin with a ‘Lost in Africa’ team-building escape game.

Set in the heart of Africa, the challenge followed the story of a renowned South African explorer who mysteriously disappeared while pursuing an ancient mystery.

With just 60 minutes on the clock, teams worked together to unravel a series of cryptic puzzles, maps and riddles to locate the explorer.

This was followed by a meal and drinks and an opportunity for the team to celebrate another successful year together.

For our final  spotlight, we talked to Nicholas Peppiatt.

Nick has been at Black Swan since its early beginnings, and recently hosted a panel on men's mental health.

Nick believes we should view "emotional literacy as a strength or skill"

"As something you can develop and work on to improve your overall performance and wellbeing".

This reframing is key to breaking the stigma around the topic.

In terms of managing his own mental wellbeing, Nick has two strategies:

"First, setting clear boundaries for myself between work and personal time.

"Prioritization is also key - actively deciding where I want to focus my attention vs. what is a 'no' or 'not yet'."

We’re talking men’s mental health and spotlighting our spectacular team during !

Our penultimate spotlight is on Zoltan Kurai.

On the topic of how as a society we can break the stigma around men's mental health, Zoltan said:

"Talking about the issues openly and showing valuable examples can help."

Zoltan put this into practice this week during a panel on mental health in the workplace.

He shared his own journey, and the importance of running and exercise in managing his wellbeing.

"Doing regular weekly runs is the biggest help, and the most efficient way for me to manage stress."

We’re talking men’s mental health and spotlighting our spectacular team during  .

This week we chatted with Matthew Schloms

We asked him about the strategies and activities he uses to manage his mental health at work:

"I usually get up earlier in the morning to start working, which gives me the flexibility to go to the gym in the morning.

"This helps with my mental well-being and managing my ADHD. Afterwards, I can log back on and continue with my day’s work."

At Black Swan, we employ a flexible working policy to help our team find a work-life balance that works for them.

And Matthew agrees that boundaries are really important for getting that balance right:

“We have flexible working arrangements, and our managers are respectful of boundaries, not expecting after-hours work unless it’s truly necessary.”
