The UK is currently in the middle of a heatwave, and while many of us are enjoying the sunshine, it can create real challenges in the workplace.

When temperatures soar, it's not just comfort that's affected.
🥵 Dehydration
😴 Tiredness and reduced concentration
⚠️ Increased risk of mistakes and accidents
💚 Heat stress and fatigue

Whether your team is working outdoors, on-site, in a warehouse or in the office, now is the time to check that the right support is in place.

✔ Plenty of drinking water available
✔ Regular breaks away from the heat
✔ Flexible working arrangements where possible
✔ Suitable clothing and PPE considerations
✔ Managers checking in with their teams

A heatwave doesn't have to stop work, but it does mean taking a few extra steps to keep people safe and comfortable. After all, nobody does their best work when they're melting.

How is your workplace coping with the heat this week?

A flower supplier was fined £134,000 after their worker was struck by moving cargo, causing life-changing injuries.

The incident occurred when the worker was manually unloading cargo from a delivery trailer. The cargo became stuck on the trailer and the worker tried to free it. He stepped onto the roller deck and after the cargo was freed, a skid from the trailer slid onto the roller deck and struck his leg which then became trapped.

The injuries the worker sustained resulted in a through-knee amputation.

HSE's investigation found:
- An unsafe system of work
- An unprotected gap in the roller deck

This incident is a reminder of the importance of safe unloading procedures, proper risk assessments, and effective guarding around moving equipment.

We hear it all the time, “It’s just common sense.”

But when it comes to workplace safety, common sense alone isn’t always enough. What seems obvious to one person might not even cross someone else’s mind. And relying on assumptions can leave gaps that lead to accidents, injuries, or costly mistakes.

Good health and safety isn’t about overcomplicating things or drowning people in paperwork. It’s about creating clear processes, proper training, and a workplace where everyone understands how to work safely. Sometimes the risks you don’t think about are the ones that cause the biggest problems.

Did you know, afternoon fatigue (around 2–4pm) is one of the peak times for workplace incidents. As energy levels dip, so does focus, reaction time, and decision-making.

Even simple tasks can become higher risk when you’re not fully alert.

Stay safe by:
• Taking short breaks
• Staying hydrated
• Switching to less hazardous tasks where possible
