The Youth Voice Census 2026 results are live. The message from over 11,500 young people across the UK resonates deeply with our mission here at the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority.

The data reveals a stark reality: Ambition is strong. Access is not equal.

Our young people are eager to learn, gain experience and build successful careers. But too often, local barriers such as rural transport connectivity, financial pressures and a lack of visible local opportunities are making that journey far harder than it needs to be. Preparation alone cannot drive progress if the opportunities are not there, or if our young people simply cannot reach them.

At the Combined Authority, we are committed to closing this gap. This year’s census provides local leaders, regional employers and educators with a crucial roadmap. It highlights exactly what our youth need from the systems around them to realise their potential and succeed in our local economy.

The future workforce has spoken. Now it is time to listen and act.

Six weeks ago, Alexej had never built anything in a metaverse. Today, he is designing immersive 3D training environments for local tech firm Capytech UK.

Through the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority’s Forging Futures programme, Alexej bypassed the traditional barriers of rigid interviews and perfectly polished CVs. Instead, he was given an opportunity to learn by doing.

Working directly with Capytech’s founder and an international production team, Alexej is driving real, impactful work from day one, including:

▪️ 3D and metaverse world-building

▪️ AI tools for video, image, and animation production

▪️ E-learning content design and development

▪️ Architecting the bespoke onboarding portal that future interns will use

"I didn't expect to be building in a 3D environment in my first week," Alexej says. "It's been a proper crash course, and knowing that the training portal I'm helping design will actually be used by the next intern makes it feel like real work, not just a placement task."

Getting your foot in the door after university can be incredibly tough.

Despite graduating with a law degree from King’s College London, Marco sent out hundreds of job applications and heard nothing back.

That all changed when the DWP and the Movement to Work scheme connected him with an internship. Rather than expecting years of experience, they eased him in with a two-week pre-placement, followed by a six-week internship.

Now? Marco is their Digital and Technology Assistant. He’s managing social media, handling tech support, and even getting the chance to lead a team. He credits the hands-on environment for letting him use his initiative and learn on the job as the business grows.

For local businesses and employers, Marco’s journey is a fantastic reminder: internships and placement schemes aren't just about doing a good deed. They are a brilliant way to uncover highly motivated, capable people who just need an opportunity to show what they can do.

The Peterborough Youth Hub is changing lives! We recently welcomed HM Treasury and DWP to our stadium facility to show how our community-led approach is tackling youth unemployment.

By combining job matching with skills, housing, and mental health support, we're seeing real impact:

📈 394 young people supported since opening

💼 33 placed into full-time work since October

👋 250+ reached out for help since April

Manager Dean Watson says: "Our young people want to work; they just need the right steps and holistic support."

Through our fully funded internship programme, you can get up to 12 weeks of real, paid work experience with a local employer in Cambridgeshire or Peterborough.

Whether you have been struggling to find a job, looking to change direction, or stepping into the workforce for the first time, this is your chance to get a foot in the door.

Fully Paid Experience: Earn at least the National Minimum or Living Wage for every hour you work.
Flexible Hours: Placements run between 12 and 38 hours per week to suit your schedule.
