The HMRC approved mileage rate has increased from 45p to 55p per mile.

From 6 April 2026, employees using their own car or van for qualifying business journeys can now be reimbursed up to 55p per mile tax free for the first 10,000 business miles.

The rate for business miles over 10,000 remains at 25p per mile.

For employers, this is a good time to check your mileage policy, expenses process and payroll setup.

It is also worth checking whether any April or May 2026 mileage claims were processed using the old rate, as payroll adjustments may be needed.
