A little friendly competition, some great conversations and a trophy to take home!

Our Associate Planner, Sam Fuller, joined the YEP Exeter Padel Tournament last night at Slazenger Padel Club, alongside fellow professionals from across the property and construction industry.

And it wasn't just a good evening out! Sam and his padel partner, Matt Still from Lloyd and Whyte, came away with the tournament trophy!

It was fantastic to see so many industry contacts come together, catch up, make new connections and enjoy a bit of friendly competition away from the usual working environment.

A huge well done to Sam and Matt on the win! At this rate, we'll need to invest in a trophy cabinet!

Another milestone reached for this new bungalow.

Following a successful planning application, Building Regulations approval has now been granted, bringing this carefully considered home one step closer to construction.

Designed for a compact garden plot, the scheme demonstrates how thoughtful architectural design can make the most of a modest site, creating a comfortable and well considered home.

Behind the scenes, our technical team has developed the approved design in detail, coordinating the architectural proposals with structural, energy and Building Regulations requirements to help prepare the project for the next stage.

We look forward to seeing this scheme progress from design to reality.

We’re pleased to share another planning success for Laurence Associates, having secured consent for a new dwelling in Probus.

The application required a carefully considered case for the site’s suitability, demonstrating how its sustainable location, relationship with surrounding development and nearby planning consents supported the proposal.

The architectural approach focused on a simple, traditional dwelling that sits comfortably within its setting, using locally distinctive materials to reflect the character of the Cornish vernacular.

By bringing together a robust planning strategy and a sensitive design approach, consent was secured without delay or controversy.

A great example of how understanding both a site’s planning context and its architectural setting can make all the difference.

Perched above St Austell, Hill House is a project rooted in history, with a vision for bringing a long-forgotten collection of buildings back to life.

But it was never simply about restoring what was there before.

For decades, the existing cottages and outbuildings had been left to decay, with collapsed roofs and much of the original buildings reduced to ruins. The challenge was to honour the history of the site whilst creating a home that felt comfortable, contemporary and connected to its surroundings.

The design carefully balances old and new, retaining the character of the existing stone buildings whilst introducing contemporary additions that sit alongside the historic fabric.

Natural stone and slate reflect the site's heritage, whilst glass, zinc roofing and slate hanging bring a more modern layer to the architecture.

Large windows to the sunroom and dining areas make the most of the extensive views across the surrounding landscape, drawing natural light into the home whilst allowing the original stonework to remain part of the story.

The wider proposals also included the conversion of an existing outbuilding into an annexe, a new detached garage, improved access and carefully considered landscaping.

For us, this is what thoughtful architecture is about.

Understanding what came before. Respecting the character of a place. Finding the right balance between preserving history and creating something new.

And ultimately, giving a once forgotten site a new lease of life.

Better places begin with a bigger picture.

At Laurence Associates, our mission is to create sustainable, resilient and inspiring places through thoughtful, strategic planning and a truly multidisciplinary approach to design.

We believe the most successful projects are those that look beyond the immediate brief, considering the wider context, the people who will use the spaces we create and the lasting impact they will have on their surroundings.

By bringing together expertise in planning, architecture, landscape architecture and energy, we work collaboratively from the outset to ensure every decision is informed by long term thinking, community priorities, planning policy and environmental considerations.

This approach allows us to unlock the potential of each site, balance ambition with practicality and create places that respond meaningfully to both present needs and future challenges.

As a Certified B Corporation, our commitment to positive impact extends beyond the projects we deliver. It shapes how we approach our work, the decisions we make and our ambition to contribute to a more sustainable and responsible built environment.

Because for us, good design is about more than what we create today. It is about the lasting difference we can make for people, places and the planet.

Planning with purpose. Designing for a better future.

Yesterday, our Director, Jason Pledger, attended the Michelmores Property Development Club (PDC) in Exeter, joining developers, property professionals and advisers from across the local market.

Celebrating its 23rd anniversary in 2026, the PDC brings the property community together to share knowledge, build relationships and explore the opportunities shaping the sector.

With our Exeter office supporting projects across the region, staying connected with the local property community is an important part of what we do. Events like these create valuable opportunities to exchange perspectives, strengthen relationships and support collaboration across the built environment.

Thank you to Michelmores for bringing the industry together.

Refurbishing a boathouse: thoughtful design, carefully considered details.

Not every project starts from scratch. Sometimes, the greatest potential lies in making more of what already exists.

Laurence Associates has recently secured Building Regulations approval for the refurbishment of a coastal boathouse, combining improvements to the existing building with an upgraded landing area and a carefully considered green roof to help it sit comfortably within its landscaped surroundings.

The project highlights how thoughtful design and technical coordination can enhance an existing building while respecting its setting.

From bespoke outbuildings and refurbishments to home extensions and conversions, we support projects of all scales, bringing architectural design, planning advice and technical expertise together to help clients make the most of their properties.

Considering a refurbishment or extension of your own? Early advice can help you understand what is achievable and which approvals may be required.

A new addition to Cornwall’s north coast, designed with its surroundings in mind.

Laurence Associates has recently secured planning consent for an outdoor kitchen at a holiday park within Cornwall’s National Landscape, enhancing the facilities available to guests while supporting the continued growth of the business.

With a sensitive approach to materials and careful consideration of the surrounding landscape, the scheme demonstrates how thoughtful design can support local tourism, create employment opportunities and respect the character of its setting.
