What’s the one decision everyone in your business knows needs to be made… but nobody is making?

That’s usually where the real problem is.

Not lack of knowledge.
Not lack of meetings.
Not lack of another training session.

People often already know what needs to happen.

Have the awkward conversation.
Set the boundary.
Stop rescuing.
Make the call.
Say no.
Take ownership.

The problem is the gap between knowing and choosing.

That’s The Choice Gap.

And it can quietly cost a business in delayed projects, frustrated people, repeated mistakes and weak accountability.

Sometimes progress doesn’t come from learning more.

It comes from finally doing what you already know.

You can instantly become an EXPERT at ONE thing…

No training. No practice. You’re just the best at it.

What are you choosing? 👀

Another leadership programme gets signed off.

Good facilitator. Nice workbook. Plenty of nodding in the room.

Three weeks later the same manager is still avoiding the conversation they already knew they needed to have.

This is the bit we don’t talk about enough in L&D.

Knowing isn’t the same as doing.

You can teach somebody how to give feedback, delegate properly, set expectations and hold someone accountable. They can understand every model on the slide.

And still not choose to use any of it when the moment gets uncomfortable.

That doesn’t mean the training failed.

It might mean the real work starts after the training.

What is stopping the person acting on what they already know?

Fear of the reaction?

Wanting to be liked?

An old story about the kind of leader they are?

A habit of stepping in and rescuing because that feels easier than holding the line?

That space between knowing and choosing is where behaviour change either happens or quietly dies.

If I was spending money on leadership development right now, I’d be asking one extra question:

What happens when they get back to work and have to choose differently?

Because another model won’t close that gap on its own.

The easiest person to bu****it is yourself.

“I’m just being patient.”

“I’m giving them another chance.”

“It’s not the right time to raise it.”

“I’ll deal with it when things calm down.”

And sometimes all of that is completely true.

Sometimes, though, it’s just fear wearing a sensible little outfit.

That’s why self-awareness matters so much in leadership. Not because you need to analyse every thought you’ve ever had and disappear up your own backside.

Because you need to notice when the story you’re telling yourself is helping you avoid the thing you already know needs doing.

That’s The Choice Gap for me.

The little space between the excuse and the decision.

Between “this is difficult” and “I’m still going to do it”.

Between knowing and acting.

Most leadership growth happens there.

Quietly. Uncomfortably. Usually with no applause.

You’re offered £10,000.

But to keep it, you have to do ONE of these for the next 12 months:

A) Never complain about anything
😎 Say exactly what you think in every meeting
C) Admit immediately when you’re wrong
D) Stop blaming other people completely

Which one are you choosing?

And more importantly…

Which one would cost you the £10k within the first week? 😂

Funny thing is, we usually know exactly which behaviour is getting in our way.

Knowing isn’t normally the problem.

Choosing differently when the moment arrives?

That’s where it gets interesting.

A, B, C or D? 👇

There’s a version of leadership that looks really good on paper.

Calm. Decisive. Clear. Confident.

Then there’s actual leadership.

Actual leadership is getting a message at 8:47am that changes your whole day, having someone challenge you in front of the team, realising you’ve dropped a bo***ck and still needing to decide how you’re going to respond.

That’s where The Choice Gap matters.

Not in the nice quiet moments when you’ve had a coffee and everything feels manageable.

In the messy ones.

The moment where you can bite back or get curious.

Defend yourself or own it.

Avoid the conversation or have it.

Blame someone else or take responsibility.

You don’t control every situation that lands in your lap.

But there’s usually a tiny space before your response.

And that tiny space can change the whole bloody outcome.

Most people don’t need another leadership model.

They need to stop lying to themselves.

Not massive lies.

Tiny ones.

“I haven’t had time.”

“They’re not ready.”

“It’s probably not worth raising.”

“I’ll sort it next week.”

Usually translated as:

I’m avoiding it.

That’s the bit I find interesting.

There’s a tiny moment before most decisions where you actually know what the right thing is.

You feel it.

Then comfort, habit, fear or sheer bloody busyness barges in and chooses for you.

That’s The Choice Gap.

And the more often you notice it, the harder it gets to pretend you don’t have a choice.

You do.

That’s the annoying bit.
