and a good time to explain what will make the new Business Leaders Breakfast different.

There are plenty of networking events where you can collect business cards, deliver a quick pitch and hope something useful comes from it.

Business Leaders Breakfast is being designed to be more constructive than that.

The aim is to create a relaxed and welcoming environment, but with enough structure to make the time genuinely worthwhile.

Each month, attendees will have the opportunity to make focused introductions, discuss current business challenges, share opportunities, ask the room for help and hear a short practical insight they can take back into their work.

There will be no compulsory membership, no referral targets and no pressure to perform.

Instead, the focus will be on meaningful conversations, useful introductions and practical outcomes.

And when we say business leaders, we mean everyone helping business move forward.

That includes owners, sole traders, freelancers, managers, team members, start-ups, charities, social enterprises and professionals at every stage. You do not need a senior title to lead business growth.

If you are creating opportunities, supporting customers, solving problems, developing ideas or helping an organisation progress, you belong in the room.

Does the thought of delivering a sales pitch to a room full of people make you want to avoid networking altogether? You are not alone.

Not everyone enjoys standing up and squeezing their entire business into 60 seconds. And it does not always lead to better conversations. Business Leaders Breakfast will take a different approach.

You will still have an opportunity to introduce yourself, but the focus will be on what you are working towards and what connection, idea or opportunity would help you move forward.

❌No polished performance required.
❌No pressure to be the loudest person in the room.
❌No lengthy explanation of everything you sell.
✔️Just a welcoming opportunity to tell people who you are, what you are developing and how the room might be able to help.
Because the best connections often start with a good question, not a perfect pitch.

Business Leaders Breakfast is launching this September at Hurds Hill in Langport.

and I have something exciting to share…

This September, we will be launching the brand-new Business Leaders Breakfast at Hurds Hill in Langport.

Business Leaders Breakfast is being created to bring together people from across the business community for relaxed but purposeful networking, practical conversations and stronger connections.

And when we say business leaders, we do not just mean directors, senior executives or people running large organisations. If you are building a business, growing an idea, supporting customers, managing people, creating opportunities, solving problems or helping an organisation move forward, you are helping to lead business growth. You belong in the room.

Each monthly breakfast will include a breakfast roll and hot drink, informal networking, focused introductions, constructive business conversations, an Ask the Room session and a short practical business insight. There will be no lengthy sales pitches, compulsory membership or pressure to pass referrals. The aim is simple: to create a welcoming space where everyone leaves with a useful connection, a new idea or an opportunity to explore.

We are delighted to confirm that Business Leaders Breakfast will launch at Hurds Hill on 22 September, starting at 8.00 am, with further events planned for 20 October, 17 November, 19 January, 16 February and 16 March. There will be no December meeting.

I was at the Ignite Somerset conference this week and I came away thinking about something that I have not been able to put down since.

We heard from representatives of nuclear and renewable energy organisations, genuinely major players, who said clearly and directly that they want to work with local SMEs. That social value is a real part of what they are trying to build into their supply chains. That there is a genuine appetite for it. And then we looked at the procurement frameworks those same organisations use. And there is a problem. A significant one.

The tender processes are built for organisations that already have contracts. They ask for proof of turnover that an SME can only demonstrate after it has won significant work. They require accounts and financial evidence that reflects a scale most small businesses have not yet reached, precisely because they have not yet had access to the kind of transformational opportunity these tenders represent. They take hundreds of hours to complete properly, which for an SME is not a minor inconvenience but a genuine business risk, because that time is not available to be spent on existing clients and billable work. And after all of that investment of time and resource, the probability of success is low enough that the exercise becomes very hard to justify.

The result is predictable. The SMEs that could bring innovation, local knowledge, flexibility, and genuine social value to these projects cannot afford to participate. The businesses that can meet the criteria are the ones that already have the scale, the resource, and the existing relationships. The framework designed to open up opportunity is actually consolidating it.

I am not suggesting the people designing these frameworks are acting in bad faith. I think they are working within systems that were built for a different purpose and have not yet been redesigned to serve the social value ambitions that procurement policy is now being asked to deliver.

What would help is a human in the loop. Someone with the authority and the brief to look at an application from a small business and say: this organisation cannot demonstrate the turnover we have asked for because no one has yet given them a contract of this size, but here is their track record, here is what they can do, here is why they represent a better fit for what we are actually trying to achieve than the larger organisation that ticked all the boxes on the form. That judgment call is what the framework is removing, and it is the judgment call that would actually deliver the social value these organisations say they want.

I am raising this not as a complaint but as a genuine ask to the people in the room who have the ability to change it. The South West has extraordinary SME talent. That is fixable. It just needs someone to decide to fix it.

If you’ve been on one of my courses, attended a business planning session, or worked with me as a mentee, this is for you.

I know how easy it is to leave a session full of ideas and good intentions, then real life gets in the way.

😁The plan sits in a notebook.

😁The next step feels too big.

😁You’re not quite sure where to start.

😁Or you start making progress, then hit a question you don’t quite know how to answer.

So, between now and the end of August, I’m offering past students and mentees a FREE Power Hour to help you pick things back up.

You can use the hour however you need. We can talk through your business plan, your marketing, your pricing, your next steps, your confidence, or anything else that is making it hard to move forward.

It can be online or in person in Yeovil.

No need to have everything perfectly prepared. You can come with a full plan, a half-formed idea, or simply the sentence: “I don’t know what to do next.”

If this would help, send me a message and we’ll get something booked in.

I'm going to say something that might ruffle a few feathers in the networking world.

Most business networking events are not worth the time they cost.

And I say that as someone who runs workshops, speaks at events regularly, and genuinely believes that relationships are at the heart of business growth.

The problem isn't networking. The problem is the kind of networking that most people do — showing up, collecting cards, having the same surface-level conversations with the same people every month, and walking away feeling busy but not actually any further forward.

The networking that changes things is different. It's slower. It's more intentional. It's deciding that there are five or six people you genuinely want to build a real relationship with over the next six months — and then showing up for them consistently, with genuine interest, not an agenda.

Volume doesn't build trust. Depth does.

Who's one person in your network you've been meaning to have a proper conversation with for months?

Go and do that this week. I'd be willing to bet it's worth more than the next three events you've got in the diary.

I ask this question in almost every first conversation.

"Can you show me your strategy?"

The answers vary. Sometimes it's a well-intentioned document from 2021 that nobody's looked at since. Sometimes it's a set of notes from an away day that was going to be turned into a proper plan "once things calmed down." Sometimes there's a pause and then a slightly awkward laugh.

And honestly? I'm never judging when that happens. Most business owners I know are doing an extraordinary job just keeping everything moving. Formal strategy is a luxury that gets pushed to the back when the day-to-day demands everything you've got.

But here's what I've seen, consistently, over many years: the businesses that grow with confidence and feel genuinely good to run are not necessarily the ones with the most sophisticated plans. They're the ones where the leadership team can answer — without hesitation — what they're trying to achieve, why it matters, and what they're actually doing about it this week.

That clarity is worth more than any framework I could hand you.

How clear is your team on what this year is really about?

Three questions I'd encourage every business owner to sit with at the start of each quarter.

Not in a meeting. Somewhere quiet, with a coffee, before the day gets going.

One: What is the single thing that, if it doesn't happen this quarter, will make everything else feel hollow? Not a list — just one thing.

Two: Where is the business grinding? Where are you or your team working harder than the results justify?

Three: What decision have you been quietly avoiding? You know the one.

You don't need a strategy consultant or a full planning day to think more clearly. Sometimes three honest questions and the willingness to actually answer them is enough.

Save this. Use it next Monday morning. See what comes up.

And if what comes up feels too big to tackle alone — well, that's what I'm here for.

This one stays with me.

A client came to us about eighteen months ago. The business was doing well on paper — turnover was up, the team had grown, new clients were coming in. But the founder was running on empty. Genuinely exhausted in a way that a holiday wasn't going to fix.

We didn't start with a strategy framework. We started by just listening.

What came out of those first conversations wasn't what either of us expected. The business wasn't struggling because of its marketing or its positioning. It was struggling because the founder was still making decisions that three other people in the business were more than capable of making. Nobody had ever sat down and properly worked out who owned what.

So that's where we started. Not with a big plan — with a clear map of who was responsible for what, and a simple rhythm for the team to work to.

Six months later the founder told me they'd taken their first proper holiday in four years.

That's the kind of result I care about most. Not just the numbers — although those improved too — but the life behind the business getting better.

Sometimes the biggest strategic shift is a surprisingly quiet one.

I'll say something that doesn't always make me popular in the first session.

Your marketing isn't the problem.

I know — you came to me about marketing. And I do love a good marketing conversation. But after more than twenty years working with growing businesses, I've learned that most marketing problems are actually strategy problems wearing a marketing disguise.

The messaging feels unclear because the positioning was never properly defined. The campaigns don't convert because the offer hasn't been thought through. The brand feels inconsistent because nobody's ever sat down and agreed on what this business actually stands for.

I've seen businesses spend thousands on new websites, new logos, and new ad campaigns, and wonder why nothing moved. Then we spent a day on strategy and suddenly the marketing almost wrote itself.

Fix the foundations first. Everything built on top of them gets easier.

What's been your biggest frustration with marketing recently? I'm genuinely curious.
