Introducing The 50 States Challenge!

My next big adventure, and the largest endeavor I’ll have ever attempted on the channel! This is why I’ve been so quiet this year. Because what I have planned for the second half of the year is MASSIVE!

This year marks the 250th birthday of The United States of America, and as a lifelong U.S. citizen I decided whatever I do for the rest of the year should be focused on this incredibly diverse & beautiful country. And what better way to do that than by completing a self imposed challenge?

So starting now, and to be completed by the end of the year, I have set myself a challenge to fly into, and feature on the channel, all 50 U.S. states!

Since this is a “challenge” there are some rules. Three, to be exact.

First, I have until December 31, 2026 to complete the flying & post all of the flights associated with the challenge on the channel.

Second, I must complete the flying in 50 days or less. The days do not have to be concurrent, but I cannot exceed 50 days in the air.

And third, for a state to count, I must fly into that state. I.e., departing from one of my home airports like Tulsa, Oklahoma does not mean Oklahoma is marked off the list. For Oklahoma to count I must fly into Tulsa or another Oklahoma airport.

The real-time flying and Instagram journey starts on June 7th.

The full flight posting and YouTube journey starts on June 20th.

The challenge ends when I post the final full flight, into the final state, on the channel.

And one more thing... Because this challenge is going to be so time consuming, and so we can all focus solely on the challenge, I have decided not to post every day while completing it. Instead, starting on June 20th, I will only be posting the full flights associated with the challenge. I will be posting everything in order and I will be posting 3 fights per week at the following times (all central). Tuesdays at 2:00pm, Thursdays at 2:00pm, and Saturdays at 10:00am.

Let the challenge begin!

How about one more clue for tonight’s big announcement. New... Special kicks... Prepare yourself! I’ve been very quiet this year so far, but 10 hours from now I will be announcing what I intend to do with the channel for the entire second half of the year! And I guarantee it will not disappoint you.  This will be the single largest announcement I’ve ever made, and what is going to happen for the rest of the year will be the biggest thing I’ve ever done on the channel. This week’s “this week” post wasn’t delayed because I forgot. Instead, it was delayed because I was taking Southwest’s inaugural flight to Alaska and I wanted to wait until I was sure what the schedule this week was going to be! And I’m pleased to announce that everything on that inaugural flight went smoothly and the full flight will be posted on Saturday! So, what’s coming up the rest of the week on the channel?  On Tuesday, we’ll be taking a United Airlines Boeing 737-800 from Chicago to Kansas City, and then on Saturday we’ll be taking Southwest’s inaugural flight to Alaska as we fly from Denver to Anchorage on one of their Boeing 737-8 Max aircraft! The rest of the week’s uploads will be filled out with videos featuring Viva Aerobus, Air France, and JetBlue Airways. Other aircraft types featured will be the A320-200, A318-100, and A220-300. Other cities featured will be Monterrey, Amsterdam, and Buffalo. Attached to this post are the thumbnails for all of them!

Inflation and a captive audience, am I right? A pack of gum cost $24.99 before tax and the airport facilities charge is even added on 🤣. My emoji choice suggests I’m laughing, but I’m actually not 🫠.

A preview for today’s From the Archives episode…

On June 2, 2020, amid the Covid-19 Pandemic, Delta Air Lines abruptly decided to retire their entire McDonnell Douglas fleet.

This consisted of both their MD-88 and MD-90-30 fleets.  And although the MD-80 may have had a more storied history, both in general and with Delta, on that summer day I decided it was more important to document their final MD-90 flight.

Why?

Because Delta was the final operator of the MD-90, which meant this flight seen here, was not just the final Delta MD-90 flight, but it was THE final revenue passenger carrying McDonnell Douglas MD-90 flight of all time…

What I witnessed that day, wasn’t just the final MD-90 flight for a specific airline, it was the closing of the history book for an entire aircraft type.  After this flight, Delta flight 90 from Houston to Atlanta, N925DN was pushed back from its gate in Atlanta and flown empty to Blytheville, Arkansas and the MD-90 has never operated another commercial airline flight.

And so, where it was also sad that Delta retired their MD-80 fleet that day too, I’d argue that this flight was far more significant in the grand scheme…  The MD-80 has continued to see limited service still to this day by airlines around the world, but MD-90 has been relegated to the pages of history.

This afternoon at 2:00pm central, we’ll be revisiting this flight in a From the Archives episode, so be sure to check back later today for that!
