That's a direct quote from a correctional officer surveyed for a recent look at jail training gaps. Officers said academy training leans too heavily on lectures — and not enough on scenario-based practice, communication and de-escalation skills, and consistent field training once they hit the floor.

An ax is a contact weapon — but that doesn't mean an officer has to be within arm's reach for it to be a deadly threat.

In a recent bodycam breakdown out of Stockton, officers responding to an attempted break-in found a suspect who grabbed an ax and ignored repeated commands to drop it. When a garage door briefly closed and reopened, they were again facing him at close range — with very little time or space to decide.

The lesson isn't about that one call. It's about how far is "far enough," how quickly cover and coordinated force options come together under pressure, and why those decisions have to be rehearsed long before they're needed for real.

Most FTOs teach situational awareness the way it's always been taught: through repetition and experience, often through mistakes. Police1's field training guide makes the case for training it directly instead — using techniques like FTO visualization (narrating out loud what you see, hear, and how you're reading it, so a rookie starts to think the way you do) and short, 30–60 second scenario drills that isolate one variable at a time.

The core idea: situational awareness isn't just something officers pick up over time. It's a skill that can be taught deliberately, without waiting for a close call to teach it the hard way.
