Scenario: It's 11 p.m. and you're dispatched to a gas station for a man yelling at the clerk over a refused refund. He's pacing and loud, his hands are visible, and you don't see a weapon. The clerk says he's been there 20 minutes. He hasn't threatened anyone, but he's escalating. You're alone on scene, and backup is about eight minutes out.

Do you move in to end it now, or give it time and keep talking? What tells you which way to go?

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

You're the on-duty supervisor at a county jail on the overnight shift. Staffing is thin: two officers called out, and one housing unit is running with a single officer on the floor. Around 0215, that officer radios that an inmate who has been quiet all week is pacing, refusing to lock in, and saying he's 'done being ignored.'

The officer says it's not a threat yet, and he doesn't want to escalate it. You know the inmate had a rough phone call earlier, but you don't know what was said. Your nearest backup is four minutes out, and pulling anyone off another post leaves a different area uncovered.

You can go in now and risk making it bigger, or wait and risk losing the window to resolve it calmly.

Most officers at small and rural agencies get very little training after the academy. Not because they don't want it, but because travel, tuition, and shift coverage are hard to come by when your department is a handful of people.

A recent Police1 piece looks at one nonprofit working on that gap through small-group virtual classes and hands-on instruction covering constitutional judgment, rescue marksmanship, tactical medicine, and simple, retainable tactics. The takeaway we keep coming back to: training only works if the people who need it can actually reach it, and if what's taught is simple enough to recall under stress.

Master Instructor Rhett Isbell just completed his 3 week tour of training first he was in New Mexico then over to San Antonio Texas and this week he was in Abilene, Kansas. Job well done Rhett. Congratulations to our newest certified M.A.C.H.® instructors!

In South Dakota, members completed M.A.C.H.® Level 3 Instructor Certification, the highest level of the program. Before that, our Michigan course earned its M.A.C.H.® Level 2 Instructor Certification.

Certification takes focus, repetition, and a real commitment to the standard. These graduates put in the work, and they’re now prepared to take what they learned back to their departments and teach it with confidence. Thank you to Nick Cassiano for leading both courses.

You're the on-duty shift supervisor at a 24-hour facility, about two hours into the overnight shift. A newer officer radios that an inmate in a housing unit is refusing to come out for a routine count and is saying he feels "off" but won't say more.

Medical staff are covered by a separate emergency across the facility and won't be free for at least 15 minutes. The officer is alone on the unit, sounds calm but a little unsure, and you know the inmate has no flagged history either way.

You can send backup and risk escalating something that may be nothing, or let the officer handle it and risk a medical issue getting worse. Either choice has a cost.
