A new Canary Media piece on the state of heat-pump water heaters features a Reservoir customer who put words to a frustration a lot of homeowners run into:

"I didn't want to be a project manager."

That's what it's like coordinating different contractors, getting separate quotes, pulling separate permits, all for one appliance. We're building Reservoir to make it easy to go electric: one price and one installation for one appliance.

Can you tell what building type this is from the photo?

Hint: One basement with three working water heaters in eastern MA.
..yep, it's a triple-decker. One building, three households, three separate systems, three separate bills.

Reservoir is well-suited to multi-family buildings like this, even if you live on the third floor. You can monitor and control it from your phone, so you don't have to trek down to the basement to check on it, and the Reservoir Max's integrated recirculation pump means you get steamy hot water as soon as you turn on the tap.

Laminar Collective, a research group that covers heat pumps in Boston, put the Reservoir Core through its paces and wrote up their thoughts, summed up with: "Reservoir is a solid entry. So we’re going to keep on installing them."

Laminar's research is meticulous and honest, and we're proud to have them as a partner. Link to the review in comments.

If your old water heater is electric, you're probably overpaying to heat water.

If you have an electric resistance water heater and pay 30 cents per kWh for electricity (typical in MA), you could save so much on your electric bill that it covers the entire monthly cost of a 0% interest loan through Mass Save's HEAT Loan program.

It sounds too good to be true, but we did the math. Link in comments.

Quieter than having the windows open four floors above an empty parking lot at 8:30 AM.

"Unless your shower turns cold, you probably don’t give much thought to your water heater.

But it’s a major energy user in the home, and unlike solar panels or heat pumps, it’s gotten relatively little attention as a piece of smart home tech. A new startup is trying to change that."

We just raised an $8M seed round to expand Reservoir in Boston and beyond.

That money will help get our predictive water heaters into more homes (we're at nearly 100 in the Boston area so far), train more plumbers on the latest tech, and balance the electric grid, all starting with the water heater in your basement.
