It’s Terry Time… and this one is all about listening to the patient.

We measure response times. We measure clinical performance. We measure compliance, deployment, utilization and just about everything else we can get our EMS data hands on.

But how often do we actually ask the patient: “How did we do?”

FirstWatch has introduced Reflect, a patient-experience tool that automatically sends a text survey following a qualifying EMS encounter — potentially within minutes of the interaction.

No paper surveys. No staff handing out cards. No waiting months for a report.

Patients can tell you about their experience while it is still fresh. Positive feedback can make its way back to the crew, while poor experiences can generate an alert to a supervisor so concerns can be identified and addressed quickly.

And I really like this bit: patient feedback can sit alongside the other measures we already use to judge performance.

Because a clinically perfect encounter isn’t necessarily a great patient experience.

Did we communicate?
Did we explain what was happening?
Did the patient feel listened to?
Did we treat them with dignity and compassion?
Did they feel safe in our care?

Those things matter too.

There’s also a bigger opportunity here. Imagine being able to aggregate patient-experience data across an EMS system, region or even a state. We spend a lot of time telling policymakers and the public about the value of EMS.

Perhaps we should increasingly let our patients tell that story for us.

Reflect. Listen. Learn. Improve.

That’s worth thinking about.

FirstWatch Reflect Survey module allows public safety agencies to automatically text patients and assess quality of care. Reflect provides questions you might ask, but also allows you to customize your own and is available in multiple languages. Good morning from FirstWatch Collaborate Live in San Diego — some great images from Wednesday, but another strong agenda today, ranging from practical applications of data to the people and leadership behind meaningful change in public safety.

We’ll be looking at some fascinating real-world uses of FirstWatch data — school threat triggers, commissioner dashboards, election polling-location alerts, geo-fencing to identify crime patterns such as wildfire arson, and demand analysis examining unit-hour utilization through a consumption model. It’s a useful reminder that the value of data isn’t simply collecting it; it’s recognizing patterns early enough to do something about them.

We’ll also hear from Blair Sadler, JD, who led Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego for 26 years and now advises healthcare boards on patient safety, quality and crisis transparency. Blair joins FirstWatch Improvement Guide Mike Taigman for a candid conversation drawing on PLuck, the book Blair co-authored with his twin brother, exploring practical ways to create meaningful change and become a high-impact leader — regardless of title or position.
