The Pentagon quietly put political influencers on the payroll?

The Washington Post reported on August 30 that several conservative veterans with large online followings now hold government roles that were never disclosed.

Pentagon records reviewed by the Post show retired colonels Rob Maness (135K+ followers on X) and Kurt Schlichter (nearly 620K) with active ".civ" email addresses, the marker for civilian employees, not military or contractors. Both sit under Anthony Tata, undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness.

A third retired colonel, Thomas Anderson, who posts as Cynical Publius to 323K+ followers, appeared in records with a .civ address in the same office earlier this year.

None of the roles have been announced. This is from an administration that calls itself the most transparent Defense Department ever.

The Pentagon has not commented. No agency has confirmed the assignments.

So here's the question for contractors: if staffing decisions inside a $1 trillion agency aren't being disclosed, what else isn't?

A $100 billion launch facility does not build itself. Site work, concrete, steel, electrical, fencing, security, freight, housing, and services all flow outward from a project this size, and most of it lands with regional and small firms. Here is the downstream opportunity map.

SpaceX's $100B Louisiana launch facility creates massive downstream federal and commercial contracting opportunity for small businesses in construction, logistics, environmental, and operations.

You can lose a contract before you ever bid it. Organizational conflict of interest rules disqualify firms whose past work, teaming relationships, or advisory roles create an unfair advantage or impaired objectivity. Most small businesses never see it coming. Here is how OCI works and how to clear it.

Organizational conflicts of interest are the compliance trap most small business contractors never see coming. Here is what OCI is, what triggers it, and how to protect your contracts.

A $14 billion IDIQ for missile defense and space intelligence just landed, and vehicles this size do not get executed by one company. Task orders flow for years, and subcontracting lanes open early. Here is how small businesses actually get inside a COMET-sized vehicle.

Parsons secured a spot on the $14B COMET IDIQ for missile defense and space intelligence. Here is how small businesses access this vehicle through teaming and subcontracting.

Amentum just told investors NASA insourcing will cost them about 3% of revenue in 2027.

That work was not lost to a competitor. It just stopped being contracted.

Federal efficiency reviews have flagged advisory and assistance services as insourcing targets across multiple agencies, and more are studying the same playbook.

Here is what makes it different from losing a bid: no proposal, no pricing strategy, and no capture plan wins an insourced contract back.

So the only defense that works is the one built before the notice shows up.

The Pentagon is asking industry how to lower the cost accounting barriers that keep commercial firms out of defense work. That question is an opening. When DoD asks what is blocking you, the firms that answer help write the rules they will later compete under. Here is what is on the table.

The Pentagon asked industry for common sense contract accounting changes to lower compliance costs for commercial firms. Here is what it signals for small business contractors and how to respond.

A new executive order puts domestic sourcing requirements on the entire defense supply chain, primes and subs alike. If you supply anything into a defense contract, your sourcing documentation just became a compliance obligation with a clock on it. Here is what EO 14415 requires and when.

Trump's EO 14415 directs DoD to strengthen domestic and allied sourcing requirements and increase supply chain visibility. Here is what every defense contractor must know now.
