David Wojnarowicz’s 𝘚𝘦𝘹 𝘚𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴 (1988–89, printed 1994) was created during the height of the AIDS crisis and later published by Aperture with the artist’s approval. Across eight photographic works, he layers urban imagery with fragmented, intimate inserts drawn from private life, creating a constant tension between public space and personal desire.

Recurring circular forms act like lenses—suggesting surveillance, control, and the act of being watched. Shaped by personal loss, including the death of Peter Hujar and his own AIDS diagnosis, the series carries both grief and resistance.

Built through complex darkroom montage and multiple exposures, the work remains a defining statement on visibility, power, and survival during the AIDS era.
