Wanting to run the oil longer? If so, knowing the TAN, or total acid number, can be a useful data point beyond the standard analysis. Knowing how acidic the oil has become can inform if a longer run is a good idea, in addition to all you can learn from a standard analysis. Want to learn more? Did you know you can take a sample without changing the oil? During the winter especially, an oil change can be a real pain, but you can still find out how an engine is doing or if you can safely run the oil longer just by taking a sample right from the dipstick - all you need is a vacuum pump like you see in this post. Insolubles - if you’ve read a report of ours, odds are good you saw mention of them in the comment. So what are they? Solids. We measure how many solids are in the tube (look towards the bottom in these example photos). It’s the oil filter’s job to keep insolubles to a minimum. And if it’s oil from a system without filtration, then a high level is still notable since it can show the oil was overly oxidized and needs changing (or a shorter use interval could be in order for the system you’re sampling.
