Su***de prevention begins with making sure people can reach support when they need it.

This year, Pennsylvania is taking important steps to strengthen that connection. The Commonwealth's FY 2026–27 budget includes $10 million in first-ever dedicated state funding for the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline, helping Pennsylvania's 14 crisis call centers provide 24/7 access to trained counselors.

At the same time, Pennsylvania lawmakers are working to make that resource easier for students to find. Proposed legislation would put su***de prevention and crisis information, including 988, directly on student identification cards, placing help within reach when a young person may need it most.

Last year, Pennsylvania's crisis call centers handled more than 145,000 calls, demonstrating just how important accessible crisis support is to communities across the Commonwealth.

On World Su***de Prevention Day, we recognize that prevention requires awareness, accessible behavioral health services, strong crisis-response systems, and ensuring people know where to turn for help.

Literacy opens doors at every stage of life.

Reading and writing are the foundation, but literacy today also means having language, digital, and employability skills needed to navigate education, work, and everyday life.

Across Pennsylvania, adult education and family literacy programs help learners strengthen these skills so they can pursue a high school equivalency credential, continue their education or training, enter the workforce, and advance in their careers.

At Penn State's Institute for the Study of Adult Literacy, that connection is being put into practice. Through its Career and Family Pathways program, adult learners can access free educational and workforce preparation services, from improving reading, writing, English, and digital literacy skills to preparing for college, trade school, or employment.

On International Literacy Day, we recognize the educators, programs, and learners demonstrating that education doesn't end at a certain age, and that strengthening literacy can create new pathways to opportunity.

On International Day of Charity, we recognize the organizations, volunteers, donors, and advocates working every day to strengthen communities and improve lives.

In Pennsylvania alone, the Department of State maintains registration and financial information for more than 13,000 charities raising funds across the Commonwealth. Behind that number are organizations addressing needs in nearly every part of community life, from housing, healthcare, and education to food security, youth development, the arts, environmental conservation, and much more.

At Triad Strategies, giving back is important to us both as a team and through the individual efforts of our colleagues. September is National Preparedness Month, a time to think about what helps keep our communities safe, connected, and ready when emergencies occur.

Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency Director Randy Padfield has emphasized that preparedness is a shared responsibility, extending from individuals and families to entire communities. But for communities to share in that responsibility, they also need the systems and resources that make preparedness possible.

That means strong infrastructure, trained professionals, coordinated emergency response, and people who are ready to step up when they are needed most.

Across Pennsylvania, organizations like the Pennsylvania Professional Fire Fighters (PPFFA) represent firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics serving communities across the Commonwealth, while the Associated Pennsylvania Constructors - APC and its members work to strengthen the roads, bridges, and transportation infrastructure Pennsylvanians depend on every day.

National Preparedness Month is an opportunity to recognize both the individual responsibility of being prepared and the people, systems, and infrastructure that help make Pennsylvania communities safer and more resilient.

September is Workforce Development Month, and Pennsylvania is continuing to invest in the people and skills that will shape the Commonwealth’s future.

The FY 2026–27 state budget brings Pennsylvania’s annual workforce development investments to $193 million, supporting career and technical education, vocational-technical programs, apprenticeships, pre-apprenticeships, and other pathways that prepare Pennsylvanians for in-demand careers.

But building a strong workforce takes more than funding alone.
Career and technical education, apprenticeships, employers, and organized labor all play an important role in connecting people with the skills, training, and opportunities they need to build family-sustaining careers. Together, these pathways also help Pennsylvania develop the skilled workforce needed to strengthen industries, communities, and the Commonwealth’s economy.

Investing in Pennsylvania’s workforce means investing in Pennsylvania’s future.

Every overdose death is preventable, and every life lost leaves an immeasurable impact on families, friends, and communities.

On International Overdose Awareness Day, we remember those who have died from overdose, support those who are grieving, and reaffirm the importance of prevention, education, treatment, and recovery.

Addressing substance use begins with compassion, reducing stigma, and ensuring individuals have access to the behavioral health services and support they need.

A new school year brings new opportunities, and this year, Pennsylvania is making new investments to help students succeed.

The Commonwealth's FY 2026–27 budget includes increased funding for K–12 education, career and technical education, school mental health and safety, student teacher stipends, and need-based financial aid. Together, these investments strengthen the learning environment while expanding opportunities for students, educators, and schools across Pennsylvania.

As students return to the classroom, these investments reflect a shared commitment to preparing the next generation for success in school, in the workforce, and in their communities.
