What a wonderful experience with Port Houston Opportunity U Cohort 10!

I had the privilege of facilitating the Financial Acumen session, where we discussed how business owners can use their financial information to make stronger, more timely decisions.

Opportunity U is a comprehensive training program that helps local Small Business Enterprise vendors strengthen their business fundamentals, compete for Port Houston procurement opportunities, build relationships with key decision-makers, and prepare for sustainable growth.

A few important reminders from our session:

🔹 Review your Profit & Loss statement every month. Understand what worked so you can repeat it—and what did not so you can adjust quickly.

🔹 Stay on top of collections. Revenue does not become cash until your customers pay.

🔹 Review your Balance Sheet. It is one of the first financial statements lenders examine when considering a loan or line of credit.

🔹 You are ultimately responsible for your company’s financial decisions. You do not have to prepare the statements yourself, but you must understand them well enough to ask the right questions.

🎓 Year 2, First Residency Weekend!

I blinked—and suddenly, we were back at school! I could have used a little more time to rest, but here we are again, working toward our shared goal: earning our Executive DBA from the University of Houston’s C. T. Bauer College of Business in May 2028.

This fall, I am taking:

🔹 Creation of New Business Knowledge for Real-World Impact — Dr. Nathaniel Hartmann
🔹 Qualitative Research Methods — Dr. Leiser Silva
🔹 Application of Quantitative Methods — Dr. Melanie Rudd

Our professors’ knowledge and passion kept us engaged, alert, and absorbing as much as possible throughout the weekend.

And the best part? Seeing my Cohort 3 colleagues again! We are truly in this together. This journey requires every ounce of grit we have, but I am grateful to keep learning, deepen my curiosity, and pursue research that can make a practical difference in entrepreneurs’ lives.

My research asks:

Why can two entrepreneurs with similar financial knowledge make different financial decisions—and experience different business outcomes?

My proposed pathway:

Business Financial Literacy → Financial Agency → Profitability and Business Growth

As National Hispanic Heritage Month begins, I am especially interested in the implications for Latina business owners. Latino entrepreneurs created 36% of new U.S. businesses between 2017 and 2021, according to McKinsey.

Understanding what Latina entrepreneurs know about finance matters. Understanding how they intentionally use that knowledge to decide, act, and strengthen their businesses may matter even more.

My topic will continue to evolve, but the purpose remains clear.

El 15 de noviembre, a las 12:30 p.m., hace 33 años, mi papi partió al universo. Hay días en que me parece que fue hace tanto tiempo y hay otros en que siento que fue ayer.

A veces veo a alguien en la calle y me pregunto si mi papi se parecería a ese señor que acabo de ver pasar. Este año habría cumplido 90 años.

A veces hablo con él en voz alta, sabiendo que está en el aire que me abraza o en el ADN que circula dentro de mí. A veces converso con él en la iglesia; otras veces, mientras manejo.

Y a veces me pregunto: ¿qué haría si me lo encontrara caminando? ¿Qué le diría? Creo que no diría nada. Solo correría hacia él para abrazarlo profundamente, en silencio. Y me quedaría allí, entre sus brazos…

En memoria de mi papi, quiero recordar que la prevención del suicidio comienza con todos nosotros. Juntos podemos crear comunidades donde cada persona se sienta vista, acompañada y conectada.

Believe it or not… last weekend, I began Year 2 of my Executive Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) at the University of Houston’s C. T. Bauer College of Business! 🎓

During a Year 1 class, Dr. Vanessa Patrick, Associate Dean for Research, discussed the Socratic method. Those words transported me back to my childhood—to a young girl sitting at home in Ecuador, watching The Paper Chase on television and dreaming of receiving an exceptional education.

Last weekend, I had the opportunity to share that memory with Dr. Patrick and explain how the series first opened my eyes to the intellectual rigor and high expectations of universities in the United States.

I was still in elementary school when The Paper Chase introduced me to Harvard University, Professor Kingsfield, and his demanding classroom. I was too young to understand the Socratic method or have the words to describe what I was witnessing, but I remember how it made me feel. I was captivated by the intensity of learning, the depth of thinking, and the possibility of being challenged to reach beyond what I believed I could achieve.

I dreamed that one day I would experience that kind of education—one that would challenge me to think more deeply, question my assumptions, and rise to a higher standard. Decades later, I realize that the dream of that young girl in Ecuador has been unfolding throughout my educational journey—and it is still unfolding today.

Dreams are rarely achieved in one defining moment. They are built quietly over decades through perseverance, sacrifice, and millions of small steps. They are also made possible by the family, friends, professors, mentors, colleagues, and communities who believe in us and walk beside us.

Today, I am especially grateful for the exceptional members of Cohort 3, who continue to encourage, challenge, and support one another. A doctorate may be an individual pursuit, but it does not have to be a solitary one.

That young girl in Ecuador saw a possibility. Decades later, supported by so many extraordinary people, I am living it.

Mi querido Danny:

Hoy te escribo con el corazón encogido y un n**o en la garganta. Ahora eres luz, viajando por el universo e irradiando tu amor, tu paz, tu sabiduría y tu bondad.

Tuve el privilegio de conocerte en la Escuela de Autorrealización de Yoga, en Guayaquil, en los años ochenta. Yo tendría unos diez años, y ahí estaban tú y María Isabel, enseñándonos el arte de la meditación y la concentración; a calmar nuestros pensamientos para vivir el hoy y el ahora.

Ahí leí por primera vez Las llaves de tu reino, del padre Dr. César A. Dávila, y aprendí ejercicios de concentración. Recuerdo especialmente el de la llama de la vela. Me pareció fascinante.

Décadas después, la vida se encargó de reunirnos gracias al paquete de un amigo que llevarías de Houston a Guayaquil. Cuando llegué, fue como si no hubiera pasado ni un solo día. Conocí a Nicolás; nos abrazamos, recordamos viejos tiempos y compartimos nuestras experiencias de los viajes a la India. Nos sentimos en casa.

Y así comenzó nuestro capítulo de Houston: las eternas conversaciones en el balcón de mi casa, los paseos por Memorial Park, los viajes a Galveston y las luces de Navidad en River Oaks.

Siempre tuviste un abrazo firme y un querer sólido, lleno de cariño profundo. Tenías una palabra decidida y bien pensada, y aprovechabas cada momento para compartir tus conocimientos. Te veía feliz cuando podías enseñar. Admiraba tu sentido del humor, tu sencillez, tu presencia fuerte y tu corazón tierno.

Cierro los ojos y te veo disfrutando tu helado favorito de chocolate sin azúcar en Amorino Gelato. Nos reímos sin parar. ¡No querías compartir el helado! ¡Qué risa! Cerrabas los ojos y saboreabas cada cucharada con tanta felicidad.

Así te recordaré: riéndote, feliz, sencillo, disfrutando la vida y lleno de amor.

El domingo en que partiste, el cielo se tiñó de rojo y se formó una hermosa nube ascendente, llena de luz… Eras tú, subiendo al cielo.

Gracias por compartir tu luz con todos los que tuvimos el honor de conocerte. Dejaste una huella profunda en mi alma. Siempre querremos y cuidaremos a María Isabel y a Nico.

Te quiero mucho, mi Danny Lebed. Te voy a extrañar.

Gloria Steinem was a woman whose courage and powerful voice helped transform the fight for women’s equality. Her message was courageous and clear: truth may make us uncomfortable, but it also awakens us and moves us to action.

📈 Revenue is not profit. Profit is not cash. And pricing is not simply a sales decision. I had the privilege of teaching Pricing for Profit: Cost Estimating, Cash Flow & Financial Sustainability for the Harris County Precinct 2 Biz2Empower Business Growth Accelerator Program.

Five financial lessons every business owner should know:

1️⃣ Your price must cover direct costs, labor, overhead, and profit.
2️⃣ Markup and margin are not the same. A 25% markup does not produce a 25% margin.
3️⃣ Two businesses can generate the same revenue but achieve very different profitability.
4️⃣ A profitable business can still run out of cash.
5️⃣ Numbers only create value when they lead to questions, decisions, and actions.

Every business owner should monitor:

📊 Revenue growth
💲 Gross profit margin
💰 Net profit margin

Hoy, 22 de agosto, se cumple un año desde que mi querido tío Fernando Cedeño Cabanilla partió al cielo.

Pero hoy no quiero recordar solamente el día de su partida. Quiero celebrar su vida, su lugar en nuestra familia y todos esos momentos que el tiempo jamás podrá borrar.

Mi tío Fernando fue el hermanito menor de mi mami, su querido “nanito”. Fue mi padrino de confirmación y parte de tantos recuerdos que todavía viven en mi corazón: reuniones familiares, conversaciones, risas y esos momentos sencillos que, con los años, descubrimos que eran los más importantes.

Hoy vuelvo a mirar estas fotografías y comprendo que una vida no se mide solamente en años, sino en el amor que dejamos, en los recuerdos que construimos y en las personas que siguen pronunciando nuestro nombre con cariño.

Tío Fernando, gracias por haber sido parte de mi historia. Gracias por los momentos compartidos y por tu valentía para luchar y vivir lo más que pudiste.

Me gusta imaginar que estás en el cielo, acompañado de mi abuelita Marujita, mi abuelito Federico, mi papi, mi tía María Rosa, mi tío Enrique, la Nona y todos nuestros seres queridos.

Hoy envío un abrazo muy especial a la Chío, a mis primos Fernando Xavier, José Andrés y Juan Diego, y sus familias; y a todos los que lo queremos y seguimos recordándolo con inmenso cariño.

Aquí seguimos celebrando la dicha de haberte tenido en nuestras vidas.
