Our Halloween happy hour featured scary “would you rather” questions, and of course we had to keep count of everyone’s answers for analysis later.

Earlier in the day we enjoyed lunch together and revealed the winners of the costume and office decoration contests. We also celebrated Lynne Clark’s 20 years at PSC. Thank you for two decades of great work and dedication to PSC Lynne!

Michigan’s drinking water needs $16.26 billion in funding over the next two decades to be in good repair.

That’s only one part of the state’s water infrastructure with a funding well that’s running dry. Our latest report, released in partnership with the University of Michigan Water Center and funded by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, analyzed funding needs across six categories: source water protection, private wells and septic systems, gray infrastructure, stormwater, water assistance, and dams. To fully address water infrastructure upgrades and repairs over the next 20 years, the state needs at least $39.6 billion, plus about $860 million a year.

The analysis creates space for an ongoing conversation on an issue that has bipartisan support and affects all Michiganders. The question Michigan must answer: Does the state invest proactively now or continue to pay far more one failure at a time?

PSCers Dan Lord and Anna Lee spoke on panels at the Michigan Outdoor Summit, hosted by Land of Outsiders, where every session happened outside, rain or shine.

Dan joined the Unpacking the Outdoor Issues panel to talk user pay, the Recreational Use Act, and water recreation standards. Anna joined the From the Store to the Shore panel to explore how public lands power Michigan’s Outdoor economy, from tourism to local business.

Sarah Himes Greer and our Michigan Department of Health and Human Services partners presented Michigan’s HIV Integrated Plan strategy for a 90% reduction in HIV infections by 2031 at the 2026 State of Michigan HIV & STI Conference.

The multiyear project was completed in partnership with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Southeastern Michigan HIV/AIDS Council and the Michigan HIV/AIDS Council. PSC led on data collection, small group discussions with service providers and people living with HIV, and supported the development of comprehensive public health data and resource allocation profiles The result, a comprehensive five-year plan with goals addressing diagnosing, treating, preventing, responding and improving quality of life for those affected by HIV.

Michigan’s drinking water systems received a D+ and wastewater systems a C by the American Society of Engineers. These grades, which haven’t really changed in two decades, highlight a crisis that is at a boiling point for communities all around the state. We worked with the Great Lakes Water Authority to staff the Water Funding Task Force researching hundreds of reports, meeting with water utilities across Michigan and analyzing public opinion research. The results are documented in our newly released report for GLWA, The Crisis Beneath Us: Michigan’s Water Infrastructure, along with recommendations on raising the billions of dollars needed for water infrastructure investment.

PSC supported the Corn Marketing Program of Michigan as they hosted the inaugural Great Lakes Sustainable Fuels Symposium! The event brought together growers, business leaders, and policymakers to explore how Michigan can become a leader in sustainable fuel production. For the two-day event, our team created marketing and promotions materials, coordinated panels and speakers, and facilitated small group conversations. We were also on-site helping manage logistics to make sure everything went smoothly so Michigan Corn could focus on leading this important conversation.

We kicked off our annual summer team outing with brunch at our Detroit office, then made our way to Comerica Park for a Tigers game.

We spend a lot of time researching and thinking about how our work can deliver enduring outcomes for Michigan communities. Every once in a while, it’s nice to step back from that work and enjoy being part of one, whether that’s a ballpark, a brunch table, or the cities and neighborhoods we call home.
