ASBESTOS: YOU WON’T BELIEVE WHERE THEY PUT IT — EPISODE 2

🚬 THE CIGARETTE FILTER

Okay… this one is hard to believe.

In the 1950s, Kent introduced its famous Micronite Filter, marketed as an advanced filtration system intended to give smokers greater protection.

There was just one problem.

The filter contained crocidolite asbestos — better known as BLUE ASBESTOS.

Yes. Asbestos.

Inside the cigarette filter.

Researchers later tested original unopened Kent ci******es from that era and found asbestos fibers actually passing through the filter and into the smoke.

Let that sink in for a second…

A product marketed to make smoking “safer” was filtering cigarette smoke through asbestos.

You seriously cannot make this stuff up.

And somehow, asbestos history still gets stranger.

🔥 Episode 3 involves royalty, dinner… and something being thrown into a fire.

If you stepped outside this morning and thought the air looked a little hazy, there may be a reason.

Fine particulate matter — or PM2.5 — is made up of extremely small airborne particles that can travel deep into the lungs. Today, PM2.5 is the pollutant having the greatest impact on Oklahoma City’s air quality.

Most people can continue normal outdoor activities, but people who are unusually sensitive to particle pollution may want to limit prolonged or strenuous outdoor activity.

And keep an eye on things today — ozone levels are forecast to climb into the Moderate range as well.

🔥 Hot, dry weather and regional fires are also contributing to air-quality conditions.

🎄 ASBESTOS CHRISTMAS SNOW

Yes… this was real.

There was a time when families could literally buy asbestos and sprinkle it on their Christmas trees to make them look snowy.

It was marketed as white, fluffy, fireproof, and safe for holiday decorating.

Today, that sounds absolutely unbelievable.

But that is what makes asbestos history so wild: it was once considered a “miracle material” and ended up in products most people would never imagine.

From Christmas decorations to building materials, asbestos was everywhere.

And Episode 2 somehow gets even worse…

It wasn’t hidden in a wall, floor, or ceiling.

It was part of a product that millions of people intentionally put to their lips.

We’ll leave it there.

Sometimes the asbestos IS the roof.

Most people associate asbestos with pipe insulation, floor tile, or old ceiling materials. On this project, we were dealing with something much different — approximately 20,000 square feet of asbestos-containing KAYLO structural roof decking.

Kaylo was historically used as an insulating structural roof deck material in older buildings. On this project, the existing roofing system first had to be removed to expose the deck below. From there, our team systematically removed the asbestos-containing panels using controlled wet methods, proper containment measures, air monitoring, and regulated disposal procedures.

The photos really put the scale of this project into perspective.

Projects like this are also a great reminder that asbestos isn't always visible from the surface. Sometimes it is buried beneath roofing, flooring, walls, ceilings, or other building systems and isn't discovered until renovation or demolition begins.

“Black mold” is a color—not a diagnosis.

DIY asbestos test kits are a good idea in theory, but they often fall short in practice.

Why? Because asbestos testing is not just about sending one sample to a lab. It’s about identifying all suspect materials, separating different areas properly, and collecting enough representative samples.

One negative sample cannot clear an entire home.
