SBTDC The North Carolina SBTDC is a statewide UNC system program that advises small & mid-size businesses.

The SBTDC is a business advisory service of The University of North Carolina System administered by NC State University. Its offices across the state are hosted by the campuses of The University and provide business counseling and educational services for thousands of small to medium-sized businesses each year. Since 1984, the SBTDC has helped over 135,000 entrepreneurs make their businesses better. Companies that teamed up with the SBTDC increased their revenue at more than three times the rate of growth for the average NC firm.

Last week, SBTDC Executive State Director Byron Hicks joined a North Carolina delegation traveling to Northern Ireland as part of a partnership between the North Carolina Chamber and the Northern Ireland Chamber.

Throughout the week, the delegation of business leaders, chamber staff and resource partners explored opportunities to strengthen connections between North Carolina and Northern Ireland through university visits, networking and conversations around economic development, innovation and entrepreneurship.
Highlights included visits with Queen's University Belfast and Ulster University’s Studio Ulster, a reception hosted by U.S. Consul General in Belfast Christopher Rendo and a dinner at Hillsborough Castle in Royal Hillsborough.

The trip was also an opportunity to build relationships that could create new connections and opportunities for North Carolina small businesses while sharing more about the SBTDC’s work supporting businesses across the state.

Thank you to the NC Chamber and NI Chamber for bringing together leaders and partners from both sides of the Atlantic. We look forward to seeing where these connections lead!

After 25 years of dedicated service to the SBTDC, we’re saying farewell to Carol McLaurin and recognizing the lasting impact she has made on our organization.

During her time with the SBTDC, Carol served in four director-level roles, most recently as Director of Strategic Initiatives and Partnerships. Her leadership and contributions have shaped many areas of our organization, including professional and leadership development, strategic planning, and partnerships with universities, state and federal organizations, and the business community.

The SBTDC team wishes Carol the best of luck as she heads to a new role at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business as Director of Strategic Partnerships and Operations for Executive Education.

We are so grateful for Carol's years of service, leadership, and commitment to the SBTDC, and wish her the best in her next chapter.
