While visiting the Ringling Museum in Sarasota this past weekend, we noticed this wall dedicated to the amazing advertising that Ringling did.

The circus didn't market with bland statements like:
"Come see our performers" or "The circus is in town".

Instead, they used phrases like:
"The most amazing circus acts ever seen!"
"Truly tremendous tricks performed by amazing acrobats!"

They understood the power of words. They used words that created excitement and were a bit exaggerated or had the same sounds at the beginning. This built excitement and created anticipation long before the audience bought a ticket.

As business owners, we can learn a lot from this.

Too often our marketing sounds like:
"We offer quality service."
"We're dedicated to our customers."
"Contact us for more information."

Those statements may be true, but they don't make people feel anything.

The best marketing doesn't just describe what you do, it helps people imagine what's possible.

Before you publish your next post, website update, or email campaign, ask yourself:

Does this simply provide information, or does it create interest and excitement?

Ringling knew that they had to earn their audience's attention. More than 100 years later, that's still one of the most valuable marketing lessons around.

If you own a business and are taking a vacation this Summer, read this.

Here's a tip from our "Business Owner Vacation Guide" on getting your business ready to run while you're away.

"Offer training sessions or refresher courses to employees who may need additional guidance or support while you're away. Make sure they feel confident in their roles. For example, if you are having one of your employees handle payroll while you’re away, practice with them 2-3 times before your vacation. Having a clear written step by step process will also help them complete the task accurately. Have a checklist for any major tasks someone will be taking on while you’re away. "

Don't assume your employees know what to do. Set them up for success before you leave!

The best referral relationships aren't built by constantly asking for business.

They're built by consistently adding value.

Bud Hurter pictured below owned Carpet Depot in Bradenton for many years. We had a solid foundation with him and his lovely wife Dianne. Sertoma Kids was near and dear to their hearts and Bud wanted to make a donation to them with the rewards he had built up with our company.

We brought the BIG check out and brought the actual check too made out to Sertoma Kids in Bud's honor. This meant more to him than anything else we could've done.

The relationships that we built in our service company were meaningful, real and rewarding and as a bonus, they grew our company!

One of the biggest misconceptions in business is:

"If I'm good at what I do, people will find me."

Unfortunately, that's rarely true.

Great businesses fail every day because they aren't visible enough. Meanwhile, average businesses thrive because they're consistently showing up.

Visibility doesn't always mean social media.

It can mean attending networking events, community involvement, and following up with clients to name a few.
