“Business is a contact sport.”
I had an ambitious business school student call me recently. He wanted to learn about business brokerage and how to eventually own businesses.

My advice was simple:
Go out.
Talk to people.
Do stuff.

You can read books. You can watch videos. But nothing replaces conversations, mistakes, and real-world reps. (I made a lot of mistakes)

Networking is something I wish I had done more of when I was younger. Always being a chatty bartender at heart, I enjoy talking to people, learning from them, hearing their stories, motivations, and interesting projects.

The start of year is fun because everyone is fired up and focused after the holiday. Most people think a broker only works for the seller. The reality?
We often work as Transaction Brokers, bridging the gap between both sides.

Closing Day Success Story!
This one was especially rewarding. The seller had poured years into building a great glass company, but he was ready for his next chapter. He knew the business still had tremendous potential if we could find the right buyer.

We did. A strong company out of Michigan, already operating across the Southeast, stepped in with the talent, resources, and energy to take it to the next level. With the housing boom in Southeastern NC, the growth opportunities are huge.

From first conversation to closing, the process took 10 months, which is right in line with the average 9–12 month timeline it typically takes to sell a business.

Recently Sold Gym!
This took a bit of work sorting through the "Buyers". Quite a bit of interest from tire kickers and not serious candidates.

Fortunately one of the longtime members showed interest and it turned out being a great fit for all parties. The new owner will be able to continue the legacy the sellers started and take the business to the next level.

The more I learn, the more I realize I have so much to learn...
One of the things I love about being a business broker is the never-ending journey of learning.

I often encourage business owners to step back and view their businesses from a broader perspective. This week, at the Murphy Business & Financial Corporation Educational Conference, "Elevating Excellence," I had the chance to do just that and further sharpen my skills.

It's an incredible opportunity to learn & share knowledge with professional business brokers, lenders, and industry experts. I listened to one of the best teachers in our industry, Monty Walker. While I only understood half of what he talked about, I learned a ton in the other half.

I always leave events like this with tons of notes to study, new ideas, and energized enthusiasm. Big thanks to everyone I connected with, and I am already looking forward to next year.

Did you know only 20–30% of businesses listed for sale actually sell?

One of the biggest reasons? Unrealistic price expectations.
But it’s not always about being wildly overpriced…

Even pricing a business just 10% above its justifiable value can kill a deal. Why? Because the numbers won’t work for the buyer or the lender.

I recently had a deal fall into this trap.
The business had dipped in profitability, but the price didn’t budge—until it had to. The seller eventually agreed to a 10% price reduction, and that made the deal work for both buyer and bank.

Nobody likes to give up 10%, but missing out on a sale entirely? That costs a lot more.
