"We don't buy diesel, so fuel prices aren't our problem."
The numbers say otherwise.
Diesel averaged $6.53/gal the week of Sept 21, about 74% higher than a year ago (EIA).
Take a company spending $250K a year on freight, on a sample surcharge schedule. Its fuel surcharge didn't rise 74%. It rose about 159%. That's roughly $69,500 more a year, and it never shows up as "fuel" on a budget line.
Where it hides:
➖ FSC or "freight adjustment" lines nobody audits
➖ Diesel-indexed rates tied to a region you didn't pick
➖ Contract clauses that raise prices when fuel goes up but don't bring them back down when it falls
Some of this is just the market, and some of it is fine print you can negotiate. The only way to tell which is which is to ask each supplier for their surcharge math in writing and check your invoices against it.
