This week at FTF, we are celebrating our Behavior Technicians!

As the professionals who often spend the most time directly supporting learners in their care, we want to start the week with a simple thank you. Your efforts do not go unnoticed. You bring patience, skill, curiosity, and compassion to the work you do and the care you provide every day.

BCBAs, supervisors, colleagues, and families: tag the Behavior Technicians (BTs) you appreciate and tell us what makes them great at what they do.

And to all the BTs in our community: thank you for the work you do, the questions you ask, and the care you bring to the people you support.

Across two full days in January and a follow-up session in February, participants will learn the PFA-SBT process through interactive presentations, small-group breakout sessions, guided hands-on planning, and case examples from community practitioners.

January 21–22
Learn the Practical Functional Assessment (PFA) process for identifying why challenging behavior occurs, followed by the early steps of Skill-Based Treatment (SBT).

February 25
Continue through the later steps of SBT in this follow-up design session, an additional capacity-building opportunity with an FTF Consultant who will model the use of backward design to develop a treatment branch.

Small-group breakout sessions will be led by FTF Consultants and provide opportunities to ask questions and apply workshop content to your own student or client.

This workshop is designed for clinicians and school professionals interested in learning and applying contemporary PFA-SBT.

Myth or fact: some kids are just bad sleepers, and nothing can be done?

Myth.

Something can be done. Sleep itself is the reinforcer (the payoff), not a behavior, so it can’t be taught directly. What can be taught is behavioral quietude: the calm steps that lead a child into sleep.

In one small study of 3 children (ages 7 to 9, two of them autistic), parents carried out an individualized plan built from an assessment. By the last 10 nights of treatment, the children met 88 to 93% of their sleep goals, up from 35 to 59% at baseline (Jin, Hanley & Beaulieu, 2013). Three children is a small group, so treat it as an encouraging example, not a guarantee.

Challenging behavior doesn't usually start severe. It often starts small:
● Difficulty tolerating disappointment
● Limited communication
● Avoidance of adult-led activities
● Low persistence

Left unaddressed, these small daily struggles are often what leads to escalation and referral for more intensive behavior services down the road.

Balance helps educators teach these skills early when learning is fastest and relationships matter most - so teams can get ahead of escalation instead of reacting to it.

Upcoming Advanced SBT Design Session on October 30th with Dr. Kelsey Ruppel!

FTF’s Advanced SBT Design Session: Generalization and Maintenance supports professionals who are ready to extend Skill-Based Treatment (SBT) beyond early teaching contexts. In this session, participants will begin planning for treatment extension following CAB6, including generalization across implementers, settings, and time.

Participants will work with an FTF Consultant to design a generalization context using the SBT Generalization & Maintenance Workbook. Consultants will model the planning process and guide attendees through identifying relevant contexts, clarifying long-term treatment goals, and sequencing treatment extensions that align with client and family priorities.

This session is intended for professionals who have already initiated SBT treatment and are preparing to extend treatment beyond the early CAB branches.
