Assent-based practices are gaining traction in ABA β€” but what happens when responsiveness leads to learners missing out on services?

Our new on-demand course, Assent in Skill-Based Treatment: Recommendations and Common Pitfalls, addresses exactly that.

Presenters Gregory Hanley, Ph.D., BCBA-D, Holly Gover, Ph.D., BCBA-D, and Kelsey Ruppel, Ph.D., BCBA-D walk through:

βœ” How to distinguish assent withdrawals from other learner behaviors
βœ” How to structure SBT sessions with assent in mind
βœ” How to problem-solve after an assent withdrawal β€” and set learners up for future participation

Designed for practitioners already familiar with SBT who want to implement assent-based practices with confidence and consistency.

Since January 2025, FTF trainers have partnered with organizations around the world to lead 41 onsite workshops β€” bringing contemporary, evidence and research-based approaches for addressing severe problem behavior directly into the settings where they are most needed.

Of these, 29 were two-day workshops focused on Practical Functional Assessment and Skill-Based Treatment. 8 workshops took place outside of the United States, reflecting a growing global community of practitioners implementing PFA-SBT. The remaining 12 covered Universal Protocols, food selectivity, and sleep.

What we've seen consistently across all of these settings is this: there is something uniquely powerful about teams learning side by side.

Most onsite workshops are open to the public through the host organization, meaning regional professionals can participate alongside host teams.

If your organization is ready to build capacity, align your team, and implement PFA-SBT at scale, we'd love to connect.

When a learner engages in dangerous behavior, intervention is the priority β€” understandably. But how did we get there? And could earlier action have changed the trajectory?

In FTF's Spring Newsletter, we explore how two research-based prevention programs, the Preschool Life Skills Program and the Balance Program, can help practitioners get ahead of severe problem behavior before it develops.

We invite you to learn more about how Universal Protocols can be used to effectively and safely stabilize students in crisis in specialized school settings.

This free, virtual event will begin with an overview of Universal Protocols by Dr. Claire Egan. Following the overview, Amanda Link and Courtney Brown, two BCBAs from Sheppard Pratt Schools, will present a case study describing how they developed and implemented a universal protocol to stabilize behavior for a student in crisis. Presenters will discuss considerations for successful implementation in specialized school settings.
