🏆Shannen Jeffrey – Tradeswoman of the Year

The Women in Industry Awards recognise exceptional leadership, innovation, advocacy and achievement across Australia's industrial sectors, and we're incredibly proud to see Brooke and Shannen’s respective contributions recognised on a national stage.

Brooke leads processing operations at Newmont Cadia and has helped drive significant operational improvements while building one of the site's most diverse teams. She is a strong advocate for inclusion, mentoring and creating opportunities for women and underrepresented groups in mining.

After making a successful career change into the trades, Shannen has demonstrated exceptional determination, technical capability and leadership at Newmont Tanami. She actively supports fellow apprentices, promotes women in trades and continues to build specialist skills as both an electrician and instrumentation technician.

“I love the week-on, week-off swing and the supportive culture at Boddington. The roster gives me time to relax and explore.” ✈️

For Michael, a Supply Officer at Newmont Boddington, that balance is was what drew him to mining.

After working across construction, gas plants and other industries, he made the move for a better lifestyle.

Michael plays a key role in keeping the operation running — managing stock, allocating assets, and supplying the heavy vehicle workshop.

“It’s like a Bunnings for the mine — we handle repairs, maintenance and reservations over the counter,” says Michael. 🔧

“Everyone I’ve worked with is very friendly. It’s interesting meeting people from different backgrounds and walks of life.” 🤝

Michael is also quick to recommend supply roles as a starting point for anyone considering mining.

“Working in supply is a great way to get a start — you learn from the ground up and gain real experience in how mining works.”

Last week, our global CEO Natascha Viljoen and Executive Leadership Team spent time at Ronald McDonald House in Brisbane, rolling up their sleeves to prepare meals for families with children in hospital.

It was a simple act but one that means a great deal to families staying close to their loved ones during some of the toughest times in their lives.

At Newmont, we’re proud to support the communities where we live and work – and to show up in ways that are personal, practical and meaningful.

Thank you to the incredible staff and volunteers at Ronald McDonald House for welcoming us and the important work you do every day.

Newmont Australia was proud to take part in the NSW Mining Careers Info Night in Orange, helping bring mining careers to life for local students and their families.

The evening provided a hands-on opportunity to explore the many pathways into mining, with activities and conversations with people working in the industry.

A highlight was hearing from Newmont Cadia Graduate Mining Engineer Michael Shawkat, who spoke about his experience starting out in the industry.

At the Newmont stand, Cadia People Director Nicola Searle and Michael also welcomed visitors and shared insights into careers at Cadia. It was also great to see Cadia team members Amanda West and Danica Tyrrell supporting the AusIMM exhibit and engaging with attendees.

Events like this play an important role in helping students better understand the opportunities available and what a future in mining can look like.

Thanks to NSW Mining for hosting a great event and to everyone who came along.

🐾 From recovery to release – a little bushfire miracle 🐾

This World Environment Day, we’re recognising the role we can all play - big and small - in caring for our environment and supporting a more sustainable future.

In the aftermath of the Christmas bushfires near Boddington in Western Australia, two injured possums were found by our Newmont Boddington team and quickly cared for by the incredible volunteers at the Darling Range Wildlife Shelter, a not-for-profit dedicated to helping injured native wildlife. 💚

Wanting to lend a hand, employees from Boddington and our Perth Hub ran a donation drive, collecting medical supplies, towels, rags and cash to support the Shelter’s vital work.

Earlier this year, our team delivered the donations in person, met the passionate volunteers, and saw firsthand the care given to every animal. 🙌🐨

We’re delighted to share that the possums - now named Phoenix and Ember - have made a strong recovery and are gaining strength ahead of their release back into the wild.

A timely reminder this World Environment Day of what’s possible when people and communities come together to care for the environment. ✨💛

🔩 Ten years of drilling into the details

We’re proud to recognise Newmont Australia’s Sean Martyn, who recently celebrated 10 years with Newmont. 👏

When it comes to thinking five years ahead, Sean is the one mapping the way.

As a Five-Year Planning Engineer, Sean thrives on optimisation—spotting and solving problems early, before they can impact the operation.

Sean joined Newmont in 2016 after completing a Master of Professional Engineering (Mining Engineering) at the University of Western Australia. A vacation work placement at Tanami—where he quickly discovered he loved working underground—put Newmont at the top of his list for graduate roles, and he soon returned to site to begin his career.

Over the past decade, Sean has built broad experience across Tanami, taking on a range of technical and operational roles before moving into long-term planning.

He’s valued the opportunity to continuously grow his capability—from operational supervision and emergency response training to conferences, professional networks, and ongoing software and technical development.

Outside of work, Sean loves being outdoors—playing sport, gardening and hiking 🌿. When the weather turns, he puts his problem-solving skills to good use as a dedicated board game enthusiast 🎲.

This year’s theme, All In, calls on all Australians to commit to reconciliation through everyday actions — big and small.

At Newmont Australia, this commitment is reflected in the people who help create a more inclusive and supportive workplace every day.

At our Boddington operation, Chantenee Islam is making a difference as an Indigenous Mentoring Advisor, supporting Aboriginal employees to feel confident, connected and supported on site.

“Seeing Aboriginal employees build confidence and thrive at Newmont is incredibly rewarding. It’s about supporting my people and making a difference,” said Chantenee.

Through mentorship and culturally appropriate support, Chantenee works closely with employees and leaders — helping navigate both work and life challenges, and ensuring the right support is in place. Her work also plays an important role in building confidence, particularly for young people coming through work-ready pathways.
