Airbus’ recent cloud move is a timely reminder for Australian organisations.

Data residency and data sovereignty are not the same thing.

Data residency tells you where information is stored. Data sovereignty asks a deeper question: whose laws govern the provider, who can compel access, and whether sensitive workloads can be reached through foreign jurisdiction.

For general workloads, that distinction may not matter as much.

For critical systems such as ERP, manufacturing, customer records, regulated data and operational platforms, it can become a major governance issue.

The lesson is not that every workload needs to be moved.

The lesson is that every organisation needs to know which workloads are too important to leave exposed to legal or operational uncertainty.

AI can produce an answer that sounds convincing, looks polished and is broadly correct. That does not necessarily mean the answer is fully supported by the information it cites.

An Oumi study of Google AI Overviews found that the Gemini 3-powered responses it assessed were fully trustworthy 39% of the time. In this study, “trustworthy” meant the response was correct and every claim in it was supported by its cited sources.

At the individual claim level, Oumi found that 67% of claims were supported by cited sources.

When AI is used around business knowledge, customer interactions, operational workflows or higher-risk decisions, teams need to think about approved data sources, integration, governance, monitoring and accountability.

The question is not whether public AI has a role.

It is whether the environment around the AI gives the organisation enough control to understand what the system is using, where data is processed and how the capability is managed over time.

Recent outages are a reminder that infrastructure failure is not always caused by one dramatic event.

In many cases, the visible disruption is the final outcome of smaller issues that started much earlier.

A missed update. An undocumented change. An ageing control layer. A legacy appliance that became difficult to replace. A dependency that was known, but not properly governed.
