Hospitality is fast-paced, and changing rotas and shift patterns are often part of the job. But upcoming employment law changes could mean businesses need to plan further ahead.

New rules expected in 2027 will focus on reasonable notice of shifts and compensation when qualifying shifts are cancelled, moved or shortened.

Now is a good time to review:

✔️ How far ahead are rotas issued?
✔️ How often are shifts changed at short notice?
✔️ Are changes being properly approved and recorded?

Preparing now can help make the transition much smoother when the new rules arrive.

We have been delivering training events for our clients this week to help them prepare for the unfair dismissal changes coming into effect in January. ✅

From 1 January 2027, the Employment Rights Act 2025 reduces the ordinary unfair dismissal service qualification from 2 years to 6 months. This means that employees who start employment from 1 July 2026 could also qualify for protection against unfair dismissal as they will reach 6 months employment by 1 January 2027 (inclusive of notice).

Any dismissals that occur outside the 6-month probation period from 1 January 2027, could potentially be deemed unfair unless the employer has followed a fair process as outlined in the Acas Code of Practice.

According to a recent survey, the hospitality industry has the highest employee turnover rate of any sector at 38.7%, rising to 47% for clubs and bars. ❗

Factors such as shift work, lower-paid roles and a younger workforce all contribute to employees moving between employers more frequently.

That’s where hospitality rewards can make a real difference. ✅

Is It Time to Review Your Policies❓

We recently worked with a large national organisation to review and update more than 60 HR policies. Like many employers, they had built up documentation over several years, but changes in legislation and working practices meant many policies no longer reflected current requirements or best practice.

If your business has not reviewed its HR policies and procedures recently, now is the time.

Work Experience at The HR Booth ✅

Last month Kayleigh joined us as part of a four-week work experience programme ⭐ Supporting young people in their HR career path and helping them gain valuable experience in the world of work is something that’s really important to us, and we were delighted to welcome Kayleigh to the team.

From day one, Kayleigh impressed us. She fully immersed herself in learning about HR and the work our team does, while approaching every task with enthusiasm and professionalism.

At the end of her placement, we asked her a few questions to find out how she found the experience and what she enjoyed most: ➡️ https://www.thehrbooth.co.uk/blog/hr-career-path-kayleighs-4-week-work-experience/

Good Luck to everyone receiving their exam results today 🍀

No matter what results you get, it's important to remember that there's no wrong path! We currently have 14 people in our team and we have all reached where we are through different avenues.

That's what's exciting about a career journey. What you thought you were going to do can be completely different and that's exciting.

Our HR Consultant Felicity is a great example of this:

⭐When I left School

'2005, went to Uni to study law as I wanted to be a criminal lawyer. However I quickly learned that I was more interested in employment law due to the cases and intricacies of those cases. One of my main interests was in the mental health of employees and how this affected the employment relationship which is what I focused on in my dissertation. When I graduated it was in the middle of a recession with little prospect of internships etc at the time which made it difficult to follow the career path of a lawyer and so I ultimately decided not to pursue that career any more and go into the working world but following something that was linked to the degree I had worked had to achieve. I then stumbled on a HR role and the rest is history and I would never look back.'

⭐Now:

'I now have a family and I have worked in HR for 15 years and every day is still one where I learn something new. I love being a consultant as it gives me such a varied workload and allows me to be involved with all HR processes.'

⭐Lessons I’ve Learnt:

'Not all your plans may turn out like you thought however it is nothing to be afraid of as the outcome will be exactly what you need or discover you want. I never thought I would have a career in HR and it is something I accidentally fell into but I love what I do and I would not change it.'

🏖️ Holidays are important... but HR issues don't wait until everyone is back in the office.

Imagine your HR Manager is on annual leave and an employee raises a grievance or a manager needs urgent advice.

🤔 Who picks it up?

This is one of the biggest benefits our HR Retainer clients tell us they value. There's always someone available to provide support when they need it.

Because every client interaction is recorded on our CRM system (shout-out Capsule, we're big fans!), any member of our consultancy team can quickly pick up where a colleague left off.

That means seamless support, even during annual leave or other absences.

❓ If your HR support was off for two weeks, would your business cope?
