We first met Bill in October 2024, at a particularly important time for our business. Following the death of my Dad, who founded the company more than 40 years ago, we had lost not only a hugely important member of our family but also the person who had led the business for so long. We were finding our feet and, to some extent, looking for direction when we decided an outside perspective might help.
Nobody was ever going to fill Dad's shoes, but Bill came into the business at a time when we needed him and quickly became someone we trusted. I’m sure there’s probably a joke in there somewhere about Bill's height and filling big shoes, but I'll leave that to him.
Since then, he has developed a real understanding of both our business and the family behind it. Family businesses have their own dynamics, and Bill has a great ability to understand the different personalities and perspectives involved whilst still remaining an objective outside voice. He has built a relationship and level of trust with all of us that goes well beyond simply turning up for a coaching session.
Bill is very good at challenging our thinking, asking the right questions and getting us to step back from the day-to-day and look objectively at where the business is, where we want it to go and what we actually need to do to get there. His advice is always practical and grounded in real-world business experience, but equally important is the accountability that comes with having someone who will challenge you when he thinks you can do better.
The quarterly 90 Day Planning Sessions have become a valuable part of our calendar too, giving us dedicated time to review our progress, establish our priorities for the next quarter and make sure we remain focused on delivering them.
Bill genuinely cares about the businesses and people he works with, and I think that is probably what sets him apart. We're very glad we had that first meeting back in 2024 and would have no hesitation in recommending him to other business owners.
