Things are hotting up... not just on the pitch, but potentially in your office as well!!

✅ Friendly (or not so friendly) rivalry

✅ Increase in absence
✅ Decrease in work focus
✅ Decrease in productivity

I went to see Allegra on Saturday night, starring Maureen Lipman, and it gave me so much to think about from an HR perspective.

The show explores what happens when someone behaves differently from the way others expect.

Some people welcome Allegra’s singing. Most find it disruptive.
And that is often what happens in the workplace too.

An employee may be labelled as “difficult” when they are actually different, misunderstood, unsupported, disabled, neurodivergent or struggling.

This week is Learning Disability Week, and the theme is “Do you see me?”
That feels like such an important question for employers.

The World Cup is coming, but is your workplace ready?

For many employees, the tournament will be exciting, social and great for morale. But for employers, it can also bring some predictable HR challenges:

⚽ Office sweepstakes
⚽ Inter-team and country rivalry
⚽ Football “banter” that crosses the line
⚽ Increased sickness absence or lateness
⚽ Hangovers after late-night matches
⚽ Disruption to clients and workloads
⚽ Employees feeling excluded if they do not care about football

The key is not to stop people enjoying the tournament. It is to set expectations early, communicate clearly and make sure any flexibility is applied fairly.

It's been a good week, but it's not over yet!
Growing up, I remember when shops and businesses were closed on a Sunday. While there are still some restrictions in place, they tend to be on the larger businesses.
So that's an opportunity for small businesses.
As this year's small business week draws to an end, you still have today to grab yourself a special offer. In a Metro Bank report in October 2024, the following statistics were shared:

- 4 in 5 consumers feel more valued at local shops
- 2 in 3 shoppers (64%) say they visit local independent businesses at least once a week.
- Top reasons for shopping local include keeping money within the community (70%) and preserving community identity (47%).
- More than 70% of consumers believe that local businesses are vital in creating jobs in their community.

Most businesses have huge competitors, but as individuals you can make a real difference by purchasing products or services from small businesses.
