One month on from Museum reopening to the public, Senior Conservation Architect Claire Humphrey takes us inside some of the key interior spaces transformed as part of the project.

Claire explores the restored Court Room, a new triple-height atrium, and a new second-floor gallery previously used for storage.

She also introduces us to the wonderful world of scrimshaw, the traditional craft of carving and engraving whale teeth and bone. The museum is home to one of the world’s largest collections, now represented and brought together in a dedicated gallery for visitors to explore!

We were excited to receive our copy of the s 100 21st-Century Buildings this week!

Nine of the projects feature commentary from our heritage consultants Jon Wright and Tom Goodwin. Their contributions span schools, homes and public spaces, including the Stirling Prize-winning Gateshead Millennium Bridge; David Kohn Architects’ The Red House, named RIBA House of the Year in 2022; and Hackney New Primary School, winner of the 2022 RIBA Neave Brown Award.

Our work with at the Grade I-listed also appears in the book, which recognises the ‘heritage sensitivity’, ‘smart engineering’ and ‘bold decisions’ behind its much-lauded transformation.

What happens at our annual Practice Day Out?

An annual highlight in the Purcell calendar, the 2026 Day Out saw nearly 300 colleagues from across our UK and Asia Pacific studios come together at Regent’s University London.

The jam-packed programme included awards, project celebrations, a special talk from Chair Jack Pringle, and afternoon activities ranging from architectural tours and boating to Ngumpie bracelet weaving – plus a special appearance from Elvis the service dog.

While we collaborate closely across studios every day, the Day Out is a rare opportunity for many of us to down our tools, catch up with one another and celebrate what makes Purcell a unique place to work.

As project lead for the museum and wider Hull Maritime programme, Owen gives us an architectural tour of the museum, highlighting some of the less obvious details behind its transformation.

More good news for : the project has been shortlisted for the 2026 Awards, in the Heritage and Conservation category!

This latest recognition follows its win in the Heritage category at the London Awards and selection for the RICS UK Awards Grand Final.

Completed in October 2025, the project has conserved the Grade I-listed Great Hall and Hogarth Stair while opening these remarkable spaces to the public for the first time in 300 years.

We’re proud to see the project recognised not only for the care and craft behind its conservation, but for creating new opportunities for learning, wellbeing and community engagement at the heart of Britain’s oldest working hospital.

Congratulations to and everyone who contributed to this extraordinary project.

What does it mean to repair an artwork after fire?

See the previously fire damaged fibreglass doors at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral reinstalled after careful repair and conservation.

Designed by sculptor William Mitchell, the doors are not simply functional components of the cathedral, but artworks, formed in experimental fibreglass as part of the cathedral’s bold modernist vision.

Their repair therefore posed an essential challenge: how should conservation respond when the material is damaged, but the artistic meaning is harder to reconstruct?
