PPE helps protect your team when risks cannot be fully removed from the job.
For plumbers, this might include protective boots, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, masks, high-vis, wet weather gear or other items depending on the site and work being done.
In NZ, a business must provide PPE that is right for the job, fits properly and works as it should. The business must also pay for PPE. The cost cannot be passed on to the employee and they cannot be made to pay for lost or worn-out PPE. They can however choose to pay the difference if they want a more expensive option e.g. premium boots.
Employees also have a responsibility to wear PPE when required, use it correctly, look after it and speak up if it is damaged, uncomfortable, missing or no longer fit for purpose.
Tip: Keep a clear list of what PPE your business supplies and make sure your team knows what is covered and what isn't. You can load this into your FERGUS favourites .
