The Employment Leave Bill has officially passed its third and final reading in Parliament and is expected to become law following Royal Assent.

This marks one of the most significant changes to New Zealand's leave legislation in decades, with a new framework designed to simplify leave calculations, improve transparency, and make leave entitlements easier for business owners and employees to understand.

Some of the key changes include:

✅ Annual and sick leave accruing in hours rather than weeks or days
✅ Annual leave, sick leave, bereavement leave and family violence leave available from day one
✅ A single hourly rate for calculating leave payments
✅ Increased flexibility to cash up annual leave
✅ More detailed leave and pay information on payslips

The current Holidays Act remains in place, and businesses will have a 24-month transition period before the new legislation takes effect.

For now, employers should continue meeting their existing obligations and start preparing for the changes ahead.
