Planning a World Cup sweepstake in the office?

Did you know that sweepstakes and raffles are regulated under the Gambling Act 2003?

To keep it fun and legal:
Prize money must stay under $500 (unless you're a registered society)
No alcohol, fi****ms, or to***co can be offered as prizes
The organiser can't make a profit — all money collected must be returned as prizes

Whether you're backing the favourites or drawing teams out of a hat, make sure your World Cup sweepstake stays on the right side of the rules. Enjoy the football!

Football World Cup madness starts today!

Unsure whether your sweepstake complies with the rules? Contact the team at Munro Benge for advice.

A valuable day in Auckland recently, with Shane and Shanan joining WWA members from across the network for the WWA Collaboration Think Tank, centred on the theme Better Together.

The event brought together Managing Partners, Partners, and Senior Leaders for a day of engaging discussion, shared insights, and practical conversations about collaboration, leadership, and the future direction of firms across the network.

A highlight was CEO Jason Croston's opening address, complete with History Never Repeats by Split Enz as the theme song — a fitting choice for the New Zealand setting and a great way to set the tone for the day.

The programme covered a range of thought-provoking topics, including:
Better Together: WW Auckland and Boutique Firms – case study discussions exploring what meaningful collaboration looks like in practice and the value it can create.
Campbell Tyson – sharing their strategic direction and Future Focus initiatives.
Viv Brownrigg (Zato) – The Future of High-Performing Firms, examining what's changing across the profession, where opportunities are emerging, and how leaders need to think strategically for the years ahead.
An open and candid discussion around capital, independence, and choice within the profession, and the different pressures firms are navigating as they consider their future.
Matt Johns – Identifying the Strategic Problem, challenging firms to focus on the real issues driving decision-making and long-term success.

Thank you to everyone who contributed their insights, experiences, and perspectives throughout the day. The strength of the WWA community continues to be its willingness to collaborate, challenge thinking, and learn from one another. We look forward to continuing these conversations and turning ideas into action across the network.

With us, you do you, Just better.

Managing tax debt? There may be a better solution available.

Inland Revenue has extended the use of tax pooling to cover eligible income tax debt for the 2023 and 2024 tax years.

Through TMNZ tax pooling, businesses may be able to:
Reduce Inland Revenue interest costs
Avoid ongoing penalties
Manage cashflow more effectively
Settle tax debt without dealing directly with Inland Revenue

Tax pooling can provide flexibility and certainty for businesses needing extra time to manage tax obligations while remaining compliant.

If you have outstanding tax debt or are concerned about upcoming obligations, Munro Benge can help assess whether TMNZ tax pooling is the right solution for your situation.

Contact us to discuss your options.

NZ Budget 2026: What Business Owners Need to Know
Budget 2026 delivered a “lean but business-focused” approach, with targeted tax and compliance changes rather than sweeping reforms.

Here are the key updates relevant for Kiwi businesses:

FBT simplification
Changes to Fringe Benefit Tax rules aim to reduce compliance headaches, particularly around vehicles, gift cards and employee reimbursements.

Compliance simplification underway
Further changes to FIF, employee share schemes, and international tax settings are designed to modernise the system and reduce red tape for businesses and investors.

The de minimis threshold will increase to $10,000, providing greater flexibility and reducing compliance requirements for affected taxpayers.

Support for Not-for-Profit Organisations
In a positive move for the not-for-profit sector, membership subscriptions and levies will continue to be treated as non-taxable income.

To help reduce compliance costs for smaller NFP organisations, the current effective tax-free threshold will increase from $1,000 to $10,000.

What does this mean for your business?
Now is a good time to review:
•Your FBT treatment of staff benefits
• Cashflow forecasts
• Tax planning strategies
• Compliance processes and reporting obligations
