Investigators looking into a vandalism and stalking case say they discovered some questionable images on an Idaho Falls man's phone

IDAHO FALLS — An Idaho Falls man has been criminally charged after detectives discovered illicit photos on his phone that appeared to be of a minor.
Casey Scott Haag, 33, has been charged with 10 counts of sexual exploitation of a child.
The police affidavit states that on Aug. 11, detectives from the Idaho Falls Police Department I met to discuss images found on Haag’s cellphone. The device was in police possession as part of an investigation for an ongoing vandalism and stalking case, documents report.
When searching the phone, a detective allegedly found a photo folder that contained illicit images of what appeared to be an underage girl, as well as illicit videos that showed Haag and the minor together.
The affidavit states that at the time Haag’s phone was taken for the vandalism and stalking case, Haag had sent a message on Snapchat to another user under the contact “Jane” to let her know his phone was being taken by police. At the time, Haag allegedly said Jane was his girlfriend.
During the investigation, detectives reportedly searched through the messages between Haag and Jane and found photos Jane had sent of herself playing a sport. Detectives determined the person under the contact name “Jane” was a minor and that she played on a high school team. Detectives found a team photo from the high school that included the girl.
At this point, detectives reportedly determined a crime was being committed and filed a warrant to obtain Haag’s data from his phone and other devices.
The girl was identified as a high school student in another county, the affidavit states.
During the forensic interview with the girl, she told detectives she was underage, and her relationship with Haag had begun a year before. She said she and Haag would send one another illicit photos and that there had been four occasions where she and Haag had met and had illicit physical interactions.
Bonneville County was not able to file charges against Haag for the alleged physical interactions because the alleged physical interactions took place outside of the county’s jurisdiction. Haag may potentially face charges for the allegations in the county the interaction allegedly took place or at the federal level, but as of now no such charges have been announced.
Detectives performed a preliminary forensic evaluation of Haag’s phone, in which they allegedly found 71 illicit photos of the victim.
Investigators also interviewed Haag. At the start of the interview, Haag reportedly told police he knew “this would be about Jane.” Jane is not the victim’s real name, but according to documents, Haag continued to use Jane to refer to the victim until he was confronted with her real name, according to documents.
The affidavit states that at the start of the interview, Haag had claimed “Jane” was 19, but after being confronted about her true identity, he allegedly admitted to knowing that she was underage. In addition, Haag allegedly admitted to having in*******se with the victim.
Haag reportedly asked detectives how many years he would be in prison before asking for an attorney, at which point the interview ended, and Haag was placed under arrest, documents state.
If found guilty of the charges, Haag may be required to serve up to 100 years in prison and pay fines of up to $100,000.
Haag is being represented by a public defender. The Idaho State Public Defender’s office does not comment on pending cases.
He is set to appear in court Aug. 26 for a preliminary hearing.
Although Haag has been charged with these crimes, that does not necessarily mean he committed them. Everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
