For a long time, business financing meant one conversation with one bank.

That's changed. Established businesses now have access to structures built for different needs:

• A line of credit for uneven months
• Invoice financing when customers pay slowly
• Equipment financing for a specific purchase
• Asset-based lending for larger needs backed by collateral
• Bridge financing for a short gap

None of these is automatically better than a bank loan. For some needs, a bank loan may still make sense.

The difference is that you can start with what your business needs and work backward to the structure, instead of taking the one product on the table.

More options also means more ways to pick the wrong one. If you'd like help narrowing them down, reach out.

Picture two businesses bringing in the same revenue.

One is a distributor with a warehouse of inventory and a stack of unpaid invoices. The other is a consulting firm with laptops and a lease.

They may qualify for very different financing because different structures evaluate different strengths:

• Asset-based lending leans on collateral. What your receivables, inventory, or equipment are worth largely sets the amount.
• Cash-flow lending leans on earnings. Your revenue history and ability to repay carry the decision.

The distributor may fit the first. The consulting firm may fit the second.

Neither is cheaper or easier by default. Each has its own costs, requirements, and reporting.

What fits depends on what your business has more of: strong assets or predictable cash flow.

The busiest quarter is often the one where cash gets tightest.

Payroll climbs, inventory orders go out, and tax bills come due, all before the year-end revenue lands.

A quick check now can show you which weeks could get tight:

• Payroll, including overtime and seasonal hires
• Inventory you'll need to order
• Invoices still unpaid, with realistic pay dates
• Year-end taxes and equipment purchases
• Revenue you can reasonably expect

Put them on a calendar. Any week where more goes out than comes in is a gap.

Some gaps close by chasing an invoice or shifting a payment date. Others may need working capital. Finding the gap early gives you more time to decide what makes sense.

Worried that simply checking your options could hurt your credit?

Applying with SMB Compass is free and won't impact your credit score. You can find out where you stand, then decide what to do with that information.

The application takes about 4 minutes. Have these handy:

• How long you've been in business
• Your average monthly sales
• Your industry
• The amount you're looking for

After that, we review your business and walk you through options that could fit. You don't have to accept anything.

If a later step involves a credit check, we'll tell you before it happens.

Requirements and terms vary by business and product.

A full warehouse and a thin bank balance can show up in the same week. Manufacturers know this better than most.

A lot of your business value may be tied up in:

• Invoices customers haven't paid yet
• Raw materials and finished goods
• The machines on your floor

Asset-based lending is financing secured by those assets. The amount you may qualify for is tied largely to what they're worth, which can open up more capital than your monthly earnings alone would support.

It isn't light-touch. Expect asset valuations, regular reporting, and a longer setup than many other options. It's generally built for established businesses.

If that sounds like your shop, we can look at what your assets might support. Terms vary by business.

Hand the same loan to a manufacturer, a staffing company, and a retailer, and it'll probably fit one of them.

The other two could end up with payments that don't match how their business earns.

That's why the right financing depends on more than how much you can get. Look at:

• What the capital pays for
• When that expense starts earning
• What your cash flow can carry in the meantime

A machine that pays off over years calls for one structure. Six weeks of payroll calls for another.

Business loan or line of credit? The better fit depends on how you plan to use it.

A loan generally gives you a lump sum for a specific need. A line of credit gives you access to capital as expenses come up.

Before choosing, consider your purpose, cash flow, repayment needs, and eligibility.

Sometimes the opportunity comes before the cash.

A large order, new location, equipment purchase, or hiring plan may require you to spend before the resulting revenue arrives.

Before moving forward, ask:
• What will the opportunity cost upfront?
• When will the new revenue actually arrive?
• Can current cash flow cover the gap?
• What would financing cost?
• Does the expected return justify the investment?

Make sure the opportunity supports your business without putting day-to-day operations under pressure.
