Jancis Robinson MW just captured the ethos and history of our w**ery so elegantly in her trenchant article, titled "In praise of (some) old California reds."

She called a recent vertical tasting of Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from 1966-1985 "The most stunning evidence of California w**es built to last."

At the end of Taplin Road in St. Helena, The Home Ranch has been the epicenter of Heitz Cellar since 1964. It's where the Heitz family lived and worked, and today it is both a humming w**emaking facility and a placid oasis in the foothills of the Vaca Range.

Heitz Members, we have an exciting release to share with you this month.⁠

Our second vintage of Heitz Cellar Merlot comes from a vineyard surrounded by oak woodlands and part of the St. Helena AVA. Our Spring Valley Vineyard, AKA "SVV," sits just below BOND’s Quella parcel. ⁠
⁠
Here, Merlot is planted on a rolling knoll with an incredible aspect and elevation. The west-facing slope receives great exposure from the warm afternoon sun and the incline allows for well-drained soil, giving exceptional complexity and concentration to the w**e.⁠

The 2022 SVV Merlot brings in the unique forest quality of the surrounding wilderness with an essence of oak underbrush, mushroom, and mint, while still being balanced with bright red fruit.

We caught up with our Director of W**emaking Brittany Sherwood yesterday for her take on how vintage 2026 is coming together at Heitz Cellar:

"2026 is shaping up to be an incredible vintage! We got an early start this year, but with some cooler weather at the start of September, we were blessed with a brief respite that allowed our Cabernet Sauvignon to reach the balanced maturity we look for each year. The moderate heat the second week of September pushed flavors right where we needed them to be, and we are now 90% through harvest. Flavors, concentration, and energy are all present in our ongoing fermentations, and we are excited to see how these w**es develop as they age for the next 4-5 years in our cellar."
