No TV. No music. No podcast. No scrolling. No cleaning the kitchen because apparently resting suddenly reminded you that the junk drawer needs reorganizing. 😂 Just... quiet.

I’ve been thinking about how uncomfortable that can be for some of us. We hear a lot these days about “regulating” or “resetting” our nervous systems and the value of simply giving our brains periods when nothing new is being demanded of them.

And our brains aren't necessarily doing “nothing” when we stop feeding them stimulation. Research into wakeful rest suggests that quiet periods can actually give the brain an opportunity to process and consolidate information and memories.

Which makes me wonder... have we become so accustomed to stimulation that silence now feels like something is missing? This is a lifelong battle that often feels like a losing one.

Ideally, we'd all learn how to be alone with ourselves long enough to hear what's actually going on in there.

☕ JOIN THE CONVERSATION... It may be our "right" to cross the street, but we may just end up "dead-right." We get so stuck on proving we're right that we're willing to sacrifice our relationships with loved ones, neighbors, colleagues, friends, and sometimes complete strangers just to ensure our ego remains intact.

What if we shifted the goal to understanding?

Understanding requires curiosity. It challenges us to listen instead of simply waiting for our turn to respond. It asks us to actually digest what's being shared and make room for the possibility that another person's experience can be different from ours without either one having to be completely wrong.

And perhaps most importantly, understanding keeps us from burning down connections just to win an argument.

That doesn't mean abandoning our convictions. It doesn't mean agreeing with everything someone says. And it certainly doesn't mean remaining silent when something genuinely matters. It simply means remembering that the person on the other side of our disagreement still matters, too.

So I'd like to challenge all of us, myself included, to try to stay in a place of care and kindness. A place where we can extend grace and seek understanding even when we don't agree.

☕ JOIN THE CONVERSATION. Confession time... do you hang them up... or leave them behind? I think everyone should have to work two jobs before officially becoming an adult: ✔ Retail & ✔ Restaurants. 😂 I worked in a clothing store during high school, and let me tell you...retail is hard. There's inventory. Restocking. Cleaning.
Merchandising. Customer service.

And somewhere in the middle of all that, someone leaves an entire mountain of clothes on the dressing room floor.

I know it's easy to think, "Well... that's their job." But that's not really the point. The point is respect.

The older I get, the more I realize that kindness usually shows up in very small ways. Picking something up. Putting something back. Making someone else's day a little easier.

So... be honest. Do you hang the clothes back up... or do you consider it job security? 😂👇

☕ JOIN THE CONVERSATION... At first glance, LOVE seems like the obvious answer. But I wonder if being needed sometimes feels safer. Love requires another person to freely choose us. We can't earn it, manufacture it, manage it or guarantee that it will be returned.

Being needed can feel different. If I'm helpful enough, generous enough, dependable enough, available enough, accommodating enough... maybe I can secure my place in someone's life. Being needed gives us something to DO. Being loved asks us to trust something we can't control.

And somewhere along the way, I think those two things can get tangled together. We begin measuring our value by how useful we are.

Did they need my help?
Did they notice everything I did?
Did they appreciate my effort?
Would everything fall apart if I stopped carrying it?

And when the answer is no, it can sting in a place much deeper than simple disappointment. It can start whispering something about our worth.

But someone failing to love us doesn't make us less lovable. Someone failing to appreciate what we contribute doesn't make our contribution worthless. And someone discovering they can live without our help doesn't mean they would be better off without us.

Our value cannot be determined by how indispensable we can make ourselves to another person. Maybe one of the harder parts of healthy love is learning to believe, I don't need to make you need me in order to believe I matter to you.

☕ JOIN THE CONVERSATION: What would you choose if nobody else got a vote?

Recently, we went on a family trip to Disneyland, and toward the end of Day 1 of a week-long trip, we were already experiencing gridlock. Some people were tired, some were hungry, and some were ready to hit every ride possible before they locked the gate. In that moment, my instinct was to take a quick survey...

If you didn't think about what anyone else wanted, what would you choose to do? Head back to the hotel? Eat and then go for round two? And so on.

Once the pressure was off and it was evident that no one would be frustrated with any one person's decision, the day quickly turned from ambiguous wandering to perfect fulfillment and joy.

It reinforced something I have been trying to exercise: If we give others and ourselves permission to want what we want, most of the time... it works to everyone's advantage. We have to set down fear and choose to risk conflicting desires. And we should be able to work through those differences.

I think it's also important to get quiet enough within ourselves to separate desire from expectation.

Here's the question I want to leave sitting on the table:

If nobody would be disappointed, impressed, inconvenienced, or even KNOW about your decision... would you still want the same thing?

☕ Now that's a conversation.

☕ JOIN THE CONVERSATION! What. Do. YOU. Want? Not what do you want to stop happening. Not what do you never want to experience again. Not what are you tired of. Not what do you wish someone else would change. Researchers actually differentiate between “avoidance goals” and “approach goals.” One is organized around moving away from something undesirable. The other focuses on moving toward something we actually want.

Which got me thinking... maybe some of us have gotten REALLY good at identifying what hurts, what doesn't fit, what isn't working and what we never want to do again.

But knowing what you don't want isn't necessarily the same thing as knowing what you do. So, if you took away everything you're trying to avoid... what would you actually choose?

Tell me in the comments. I'm genuinely curious whether this question is easy for you or makes your brain immediately request a recess. 😂☕

As someone who is fascinated with the healing journey… this one is the hardest mindsets to fully conceptualize - and embrace because it requires connection, intimacy… and maybe even some level of love and care. It requires someone else. It seems like a brave journey to master the things we can control, the things we choose… but this element is not something of our choosing. I hope as humans we find one another again! 🙏🌷

☕ JOIN THE CONVERSATION... 80s or 90s... which decade wins your playlist? 🎵 What's ONE song you'll never skip when it comes on? 😄 I have a feeling I'm about to build a pretty amazing playlist from the comments. I personally feel like my whole being lights up when Footloose enters the scene. It's even better if it's part of a wedding reception playlist, lol! 🤪😂

Music does have an incredible way of taking us right back to a specific moment in time. One song can instantly remind us of a road trip, a first dance, high school, a summer job, or someone we haven't thought about in years.

So... Survey Says...
🎸 80s music forever.
🎤 Nope... the 90s all day.
🎶 Somewhere in between.

☕JOIN THE CONVERSATION! Do you struggle to wrangle your thoughts into submission? What if your thoughts aren't telling you the truth? This feels a little vulnerable to admit... there was a time when I genuinely believed every thought that entered my mind.

Even the irrational ones. Especially the anxious ones. And that created a lot of unnecessary suffering. One of the most important lessons I've learned is this:

Not every thought is...
✔ Worth my time.
✔ Healthy.
✔ Correct.

We all experience life through our own unique lens. Past experiences. Past hurts. Past disappointments. And sometimes those experiences convince us to assume the worst when there might be another explanation entirely.

Lately, I've been trying to replace assumptions with a simple question, "Are you okay?"

It's amazing how often that one question changes the entire conversation. I'm still learning. But I'd rather build my relationships on curiosity than assumptions. What helps you quiet the noise in your mind?👇 I'd love to hear your thoughts.
