I recently returned from travelling and developed a health concern. Rather than immediately seeking an in-person consultation, I initiated a telemedicine consultation. The outcome was not a diagnosis, but something equally valuable: a structured assessment, guidance on what to monitor and a clear action plan for the next steps.

The experience reminded me of a similar situation three years ago today while attending an ethics programme at Venice International University in Italy. Following concerns about a possible Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) after travelling and still being abroad, I received remote clinical guidance that ultimately led me to seek further assessment when I returned home. While no definitive diagnosis was provided remotely, I received something equally important: clarity.

That experience became deeply intertwined with my PhD research into telemedicine at Africa Centre for Inclusive Health Management. It reinforced a lesson that continues to shape my thinking today: the value of digital health is not always in providing immediate solutions, but in enabling timely access, informed decision-making and appropriate pathways to care.

As digital technologies become increasingly embedded in our lives, I believe the conversation needs to evolve beyond how we live alongside technology. Instead, we should be asking how technology operates alongside us while we live our lives - supporting, rather than directing, the decisions that affect our health and wellbeing. Responsible digital health innovation is ultimately not about the technology itself; it is about designing systems that help people navigate uncertainty, access care and make better decisions when they need it most.

I recently became aware that my Master’s dissertation has been cited in peer-reviewed literature. What matters to me is not the citation itself, but the reminder that applied, context-aware research can continue to inform both policy thinking and implementation.

In areas such as digital health, where innovation and policy-making must evolve together, this reinforces the value of grounding decisions in evidence that reflects real system realities.

We’re still accepting applications for 2026’s PgDip programme, but time is running out on 30 January and the annual summer school is taking place in the week of 2 February, so it’s time for action.

Why study with us? Here’s a whole bunch of reasons: https://www.healthmanagement.sun.ac.za/why-study-with-us/

I’m pleased to share that I’ve completed the PMI Essentials: M.O.R.E. – Maximizing Project Success course, grounded in Project Management Institute’s Maximizing Project Success research.

What resonated most is the reframing of project success - not as delivery alone, but as value that is worth the effort and expense.

The M.O.R.E. framework challenges project professionals to step up in four critical ways:

Manage Perceptions. Own Project Success. Relentlessly Reassess. Expand Perspective.

Our work should be viewed through a broader lens; considering enterprise impact, as well as environmental, societal, and ethical dimensions.

The module strengthened my ability to:

- Apply strategic thinking and business acumen by analysing organisational context, competitive positioning and business impact.

- Demonstrate entrepreneurial leadership within constraints, identifying opportunities, creatively managing resources and driving innovation despite limitations.

A timely reminder that project professionals are uniquely positioned to deliver transformative impact not only within organisations, but across the communities we serve.
