Thank you More than a Migrant Worker for featuring Jose Jesus, aka Chuchu and sharing his story. Chuchu joins our farm every year from Mexico, and this year marks 13 years with HGE. We are so thankful that Chuchu is part of our team.
My name is José Jesús Larios Ramirez and I am from the state of Hidalgo. I have been coming here for twelve years, to the same farm (Huebel Grapes Estates). I came here to bring my family forward – because here we live, there is hardly any work. Back home, I do the same work in fields – growing crops like corn, green beans, tomatoes – vegetables.
I heard about the program because it was being promoted in the municipality. A relative who worked at the town hall told me there was an opportunity and I went to apply to join. It is good. For bringing the family forward, the program is good.
I have a wife and three daughters. One is 18, one is about to turn 15 and the other is eight. It is really sad leaving them but there is no other choice. Over there, there is hardly any work left. They’re all studying. My oldest daughter wants to be an agronomist or something like that – something to do with the fields. My wife is María Guadalupe. We have been married 18 years.
I think that Canadians should value the work we do here, because it is very… really, the work we do here is hard work. Most of all, we also have to leave our families behind, which is also difficult for us.
