Prized in China for centuries, jade has long been associated with qualities including purity, virtue and longevity, with its symbolism often extending to the subjects carefully carved into each piece.

Our forthcoming Asian Art auction includes a selection of jades from a private European family collection, spanning the Song and Ming dynasties.

Among them is a Ming dynasty white jade ‘He-He Er Xian’ belt buckle, finely carved with the twin spirits of harmony and union (£4,000 - £8,000), and a white jade ‘Dragon and Phoenix’ pendant, two auspicious symbols traditionally associated with harmony and prosperity (£3,000 - £5,000).

Dating earlier is a Song dynasty celadon jade mountain carving, depicting a seated Arhat within a recessed cave (£1,500 - £2,500).

Three very different examples of the artistry, symbolism and remarkable detail found in Chinese jade carving.

Asian Art is now online. Bringing together Chinese and Asian ceramics, works of art, jade, bronzes and more, the catalogue includes pieces from a number of private collections.

Pictured is a fine and rare Qing dynasty Chinese famille rose bowl, probably Qianlong period, bearing a four-character Caixiutang Zhi mark - ‘made for the Hall of Brilliant Elegance’. Delicately decorated with chickens and chicks within an abundant landscape, the bowl comes with provenance from Ribby Hall, Lancashire.

It is one of a number of works in the auction with connections to established private collections, offering collectors the opportunity to acquire pieces with both quality and provenance.

A little Mediterranean sunshine ahead of tomorrow’s sale… Ethelbert White’s Hillside, Cassis captures the landscape of the South of France in rich, expressive colour. White (1891–1972) was a British painter and wood engraver whose work frequently turned to landscape, and this view of Cassis is a particularly inviting example.

Two pieces of Chinese porcelain, two very different stories.

William Batt takes a closer look at two impressive examples of Chinese ceramics coming up at Duke’s.

The first comes from the Selected Contents of Breamore House and will go under the hammer tomorrow in The Autumn Auction.

Born in Kyiv in 1898, Abraham Mintchine moved to Paris in 1925, where he became associated with the School of Paris and developed the bold, expressive style for which he is now known.

His work caught the attention of influential art dealer René Gimpel in the late 1920s, but Mintchine’s success was tragically short-lived. He died in 1931, aged just 33.

Painted circa 1931, Bunch of Flowers therefore comes from the very end of the artist’s brief but prolific career.

The painting also has wonderful provenance: it was purchased from The Redfern Gallery, London, in November 1955, before passing by family descent.

A remarkable collection of ceramics forms a significant part of the Selected Contents of Breamore House, offered in our forthcoming Autumn Auction.

The collection includes an array of Chinese porcelain, much of which has formed part of the interiors of this historic New Forest house for generations.

Leading the collection is Lot 26, a superb pair of Kangxi period blue and white ‘Soldier’ vases and covers. Standing an impressive 106cm high, the pair have long occupied a guard-like role at Breamore House.

Elsewhere, the collection ranges from imposing rouleau vases to delicately decorated bowls, including a large famille rose rouleau vase, an iron-red landscape vase and examples of blue and white and famille rose porcelain.

A wonderful opportunity to acquire pieces with a direct connection to one of the New Forest’s most historic country houses.
