Before you sign a contract for your next hire, run the full numbers.
The ONS median full-time salary is £39,039 (ASHE 2025). Most business owners budget for that and stop. Here is what the actual cost looks like in 2026/27:
Salary: £39,039
Employer NI at 15% above £5,000: £5,106
Auto-enrolment pension at 3%: £984
Total before day one: £45,129
If you qualify for Employment Allowance you can reduce that NI bill by up to £10,500. Single-director companies cannot claim it.
On top of that: recruitment fees if you use an agency (typically 15 to 20% of salary), equipment, software, onboarding time and absence cover.
After statutory holiday, a full-time employee gives you around 1,740 working hours a year. At £45,129 that is just under £26 an hour before the additional costs.
If the work is consistent and the volume is there, a hire is absolutely the right decision. The question is whether you have 37.5 hours of work every single week before you commit to that cost.
Many growing businesses need eight hours of bookkeeping, six hours of admin and inbox management and a few hours of project support per week. That is a part-time requirement carrying a full-time salary structure.
Outsourced support at eleVare works differently. You pay for the hours the work takes. No NI, no pension contributions, no recruitment fees, no notice period, no equipment costs.
