“Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is really celebrated for its bright acidity, its aromatic intensity, its refreshing character.”

So says Brent Marris, who grew up in one of Marlborough’s pioneering winegrowing families and went on to produce Oyster Bay wines before founding Wither Hills.

IMPROVING THE New Zealand wine industry isn’t just about making better wine, says 2026 Tonnellerie de Mercurey Marlborough Young Winemaker of the Year Nick Lamain. “It’s about building more resilient businesses.”

That was a thread running through his speech in this year’s regional competition, as Nick joined nine other contestants in tackling a slew of challenges, from blending, laboratory work and wine judging to presentations, an interview and general wine industry knowledge.

The Isabel Estate winemaker, who previously won the Marlborough title in 2024, said resilience means “understanding consumers as deeply as our vineyards, building distinctive brands, protecting value instead of chasing volume, and diversifying markets so one customer, one country or one variety isn’t carrying the business.” Success should be measured “not by the price per litre or medals won, but in loyal customers, repeat purchases and healthy margins”.

Nick will now represent Marlborough in the national final, to be held at Foley’s The Runholder in Martinborough on 25 August, with the 2026 Tonnellerie de Mercurey Young Winemaker of the Year to be announced at the New Zealand Wine 2026 Celebration Dinner on 27 August.

Kris Godsall kicked off his wine career when he was just 16, joining the New Zealand School of Winegrowing for his last two years at Marlborough Boys’ College.

He’d grown up surrounded by vineyards, and “it really piqued an interest”, he says a decade on, having become the 2026 Ormond Nurseries Marlborough Young Viticulturist of the Year. Kris says he liked cooking and chemistry, so initially thought winemaking would “pull that all together”. But as he learned, he found that viticulture came more naturally, “and I enjoyed it a lot more”.

Kris will represent Marlboorugh at the National Final held at Escarpement in Martinborough this Wednesday 26 August. The contestants will give their speeches and the winner will be announced at the NZWine Celebration Dinner on Thursday 27 August at Takina Wellington Convention and Exhibition Centre.

More than 40 years after he made the first Cloudy Bay Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, Kevin Judd has been named a 2026 New Zealand Winegrowers Fellow. The announcement is the latest in a series of accolades for the winemaker and photographer, whose extraordinary wines and images have helped put Marlborough and New Zealand wine on the map.
