It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Mark Haythornthwaite, beloved husband, surrogate Grandad, Kiwi Father, and founder of Haythornthwaite Wines.
Mark passed away peacefully yesterday at 3:30pm after a long illness, surrounded by love.
Originally from South Africa, Mark left the corporate world in 1991 to pursue a long-held dream of owning a vineyard. With no formal winemaking background, just an unwavering passion for good wine, he planted vines on bare sheep paddocks in Martinborough in 1992. From those humble beginnings grew a thriving vineyard, a beautiful tasting room, and wines that earned loyal followings across Aotearoa and beyond.
His favourite varieties — Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris and our flagship Pinot Noir — reflect the care, patience and dedication he poured into every vintage.
Mark is survived by his loving wife Susan, his “surrogate” grandchild Aarya and Kiwi "child" Santi, who were at the heart of everything he built. Susan joined Mark in the vineyard journey early on, drawn by the romance of wine, the Wairarapa sunshine, and the satisfaction of creating something lasting together.
We know many of you have shared in Mark’s passion over the years, whether through a bottle enjoyed with friends or a visit to the cellar door. We thank you for the kindness and support already shown to Susan and the whānau during this time.
Funeral details: 11:30am, Monday 23 February 2026, St Andrew's Church, Dublin Street, Martinborough.
With gratitude and remembrance,
The Haythornthwaite Wines Team
