It takes a village… and a few wagging tails.

This year’s Pinot Noir harvest brought together over 30 legends, friends, whānau, and some very enthusiastic four-legged “supervisors” who took their roles extremely seriously (mainly quality control and morale boosting).

With laughter in the vines, muddy boots, and paws underfoot, every grape was hand-picked with care, just as it should be.

At Haythornthwaite, our wines are made the old-fashioned way, by hand, with heart, and with a little help from our furry friends.

From vine to bottle, it’s all done with aroha… and apparently, a strong dog presence.

We can’t wait for you to taste the magic of Harvest 2026 🍷

Ngā mihi nui to our incredible crew, two legs and four 🐶

We were incredibly lucky to have a crew of over 30 amazing volunteers join us to pick our Pinot Noir this year, friends, whānau, and even a few four-legged helpers in the mix.

Every grape at Haythornthwaite is hand-picked with care, bringing together many hands, plenty of laughter, and a shared love for what we do.

From vine to bottle, it’s all done with intention, connection, and a whole lot of aroha, and we can’t wait for you to taste the result in every glass.

Ngā mihi nui to everyone who helped make this harvest so special

Harvest 2026 is underway at Haythornthwaite Wines and what a special start it’s been.

Our Pinot Noir has been hand picked by an incredible crew of 30 strong, made up of friends, whānau and a few four legged helpers keeping watch among the vines. It truly takes a village, and we feel so lucky to have such an amazing community behind us.

Every bunch is carefully selected by hand, ensuring only the best fruit makes its way into the winery. From vine to bottle, this is wine made with care, connection and a whole lot of love.

Here’s to another beautiful vintage in Martinborough. 🍇

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Mark Haythornthwaite, beloved husband, surrogate Grandad, Kiwi Father, and founder of Haythornthwaite Wines.

Mark passed away peacefully yesterday at 3:30pm after a long illness, surrounded by love.

Originally from South Africa, Mark left the corporate world in 1991 to pursue a long-held dream of owning a vineyard. With no formal winemaking background, just an unwavering passion for good wine, he planted vines on bare sheep paddocks in Martinborough in 1992. From those humble beginnings grew a thriving vineyard, a beautiful tasting room, and wines that earned loyal followings across Aotearoa and beyond.

His favourite varieties — Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris and our flagship Pinot Noir — reflect the care, patience and dedication he poured into every vintage.

Mark is survived by his loving wife Susan, his “surrogate” grandchild Aarya and Kiwi "child" Santi, who were at the heart of everything he built. Susan joined Mark in the vineyard journey early on, drawn by the romance of wine, the Wairarapa sunshine, and the satisfaction of creating something lasting together.

We know many of you have shared in Mark’s passion over the years, whether through a bottle enjoyed with friends or a visit to the cellar door. We thank you for the kindness and support already shown to Susan and the whānau during this time.

Funeral details: 11:30am, Monday 23 February 2026, St Andrew's Church, Dublin Street, Martinborough.

With gratitude and remembrance,
The Haythornthwaite Wines Team
