Took a jog around the Lincoln monument today and realized it has been a bit more than 15 years since I went for a jog and ran into a friend of a friend, who later sent me a job posting to apply to work for Xavier Becerra in Congress.

How different life would be...
.. if I hadn't gone for a jog that day,.. if I hadn't been sent the job posting,.. if that first door in the Congressman's office hadn't been opened to me.

I am so grateful for all I learned through that story, and through every experience and every person I've met in DC since then.

Today I reflected on this story in my workshop with fellows. GFA runs a fantastic, paid 2-year fellowship supporting people working in state government.

Their application for the next cohort just opened up. First deadline is 10/22.

At the Pentagon this moving tribute to 9/11 victims beamed into the sky -- a quiet, powerful, reminder of the 184 lives lost at this site and of the victims in PA and NY, where lost lives are still being identified twenty years after the tragic terrorist attack.

As I watched the light alongside others also drawn to the site, the story of teachers Hilda Taylor, Sara Clark and James Debeuneure, and eleven year old students Bernard Brown, Asia Cottom and Rodney Dickens came to mind and still tugs at my heart.

The educators and sixth graders boarded flight 77 at Dulles airport on 9/11/2001 with the intention of participating in an educational National Geographic Society ecology conference in California.

I'm keeping in mind today the educators and their mission to inspire young minds, the three students ready to learn and explore, their loved ones, their colleagues, their classmates, first responders and all of the 9/11 victims and surviving families.

Teaching outdoor yoga at the The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is hands down one of my all-time favorite DC experiences. Thanks again to everybody who joined me to flow on the beautiful and historic grounds! And a very special thank you to Jasmin Chavez and Virginia LULAC LULAC Council 4613 for opening the Kennedy Center's doors by inviting me to lead a class at your Viva Cultura festival!

These photos are a glimpse from my two classes in July, which marked my first time teaching a group in-person in well over a year.

When the pandemic started, I stopped my hobby of teaching in-person at Corepower Yoga. I started to imagine what else might be possible -- and how else I might be able to share my love for yoga, leadership development and community.

I rolled out Hope and Power Strategies, Leadership & Career Coaching as my new passion project and space to offer online executive leadership coaching sessions as well as group yoga and leadership workshops.

In doing so, I connected with wonderful students and clients from across the country.

While I taught them, I also left every class inspired by what they taught me through their stories and courage. Even in the unknown and scary world of COVID-19, they bought their first homes, landed and started new jobs, and built their internal and physical strength in remarkable ways.

Little did I know that my online classes and community organizing would bridge me to this unique opportunity of teaching at one of the world's historic arts institutions once it began its process of reopening (while of course following COVID-19 safety precautions).

As I would do in the old days, I closed my yoga classes sharing a quote linked to my class theme. I shared President John F. Kennedy's words that are engraved on the building and that are moving still with all we are living through today:

"I look forward to an America which will not be afraid of grace and beauty.

I am certain that after the dust of centuries has passed over our cities, we, too, will be remembered

not for victories or defeats in battle or in politics,

but for our contribution to the human spirit."

After such a long time of connecting over laptop screens, it was really heartwarming to connect with some of my zoom students, mentees, coworkers and friends on the Kennedy Center's beautiful outdoor space.

While I love leading leadership workshops I also LOVE being on the student end. Thanks to the UC San Diego Alumni board, staff, and Amanda Flisher and Kenzi Judge for a really thoughtful and inspiring alumni board orientation, Gallup workshop and retreat!

Before our board meeting we all took the Gallup strengthsfinder assessment to identify our top five of 34 strengths -- and then we mapped out what our collective skills are as a board. This visual was really helpful for discussing how to leverage our individual and collective strengths to advance our work as board members for our alma mater.

The conversations were rich, I learned a lot about my fellow board members' passions and I'm leaving our zoom energized by our talk on how we can best excel as strength-driven team.

In a moment when so many of us are committed to big issues like supporting the university's ongoing pandemic-related safety and learning needs, helping students with financial and housing needs and advancing equity in education, our retreat helped us focus in on how to leverage our strengths to better support students and alumni.

I'm excited to see all that our board and staff will accomplish based on the foundation we built with each other these past two days.

Rise & shine, friends! Then join me for my 10am class! ☀️🧘🏽‍♀️

Leading a group of about 80 yogis outside on these beautiful grounds last weekend, especially after all we've been through over the past year and a half, will hands-down be one of my most heart-warming and memorable days.

And today we get to do it again!

Class will start and end with chill music. The middle will weave in upbeat, danceable songs so we can stretch, sculpt and flow to Afro-Latinx artists -- in support of the and Afro-Latinx-themed festival.

A few tips:
