Chelsea Restoration Co-Owner and Primary Restorer John Powell, co-presented with long time colleague Robert Simon, Ph.D. at the University of Scranton Schemel Forum about the discovery of overpainted sections of Niccolò Betti’s “Madonna and Child with the Young St. John the Baptist. Hosted by Dr. George Aulisio, Dean of the Weinberg Memorial Library and Director of the Schemel Forum, the event was a success with a larger than expected attendance and a very engaged audience who asked many great questions.

We were treated to an amazing holiday treat by at the venerable for our studio holiday outing. What an amazing and beautiful New York jewel! And Robert is a true New York art world mondain. In addition to a truly delicious meal, we received a personalized tour of their Winter Show exhibit (our very own has a painting in the exhibit) and a behind-the-scenes tour of their Winter Show club that few people would be so lucky to experience. We are grateful for our relationship with the National Arts Club and the incomparable Robert Yahner! Peace On Earth ☮️ Good Will to ALL 🕊️

A beautiful transformation of a Qajar period portrait. Most likely 19th century and reflecting the European influence on Iranian culture, especially among the aristocratic classes. The treatment for this work included humidity treatments to relax the deep folds and distortions in the canvas, cleaning it removing extensive overpaint, filling and inpainting old damages and losses, lining the canvas with Beva as an adhesive with a conservation grade Mylar interlead and a Belgian Linen backing, then stretching the relined canvas onto a custom-made wooden, expandable, stretcher and then varnished with a synthetic resin varnish.

Happy to be celebrating 20 years in business in New York City! 🍾 It looks like we’re here to stay for a little while 😉. Some even say we’re getting to be a “thing” around these parts 😊. Photos are a before (with lots of varnish and dirt issues) and after; both we, and more importantly, the client were very pleased with the results. And a studio shot showing a crisp and beautiful winter day overlooking the Harlem River.
