One thing this industry has taught me:

Independent cleaners are incredibly resilient.

But resilience should not mean constant operational exhaustion.

Many cleaners are managing production, staffing, customer service, compliance, routes, claims, scheduling, and training — all at the same time.

That is why SmartCare OS is being built around operational support and operational clarity.

Helping cleaners organize workflows, reduce recurring confusion, identify operational pressure, improve consistency, and create structure around the business.

Because independent cleaners deserve systems that actually support the realities of how they work every day.

“Failing to use AI could cost you your job.”

That’s the headline.

But here’s the truth no one is saying clearly enough:

👉 AI is not the threat.
👉 Lack of structure is.

I just published a response to a Fast Company article making this claim, and the real issue is not adoption.

It’s readiness.

Right now, companies are:

Rolling out AI tools
Expecting productivity gains
Creating pressure on employees

But they are not:

Defining how AI should be used
Training teams with clear expectations
Building governance into the process

So what happens?

Confusion.
Resistance.
Risk.

Even though the opportunity is massive.

This is what we call the Readiness Gap.

And it’s why some teams will accelerate…

…while others will stall out or fail.

If you want AI to work in your organization, you need:

✔ Structured adoption
✔ Clear governance
✔ Defined expectations for employees

Not fear-based mandates.

Because AI doesn’t replace people.

It exposes weak systems.

This is exactly why we’ve been focused on AI readiness, governance, and systems through frameworks like SmartCare OS.

Eight decades later, the mission remains rooted in the same principle: protect the integrity of professional garment care while equipping operators for what comes next.

Eighty years is not simply a measure of time.
For an association, it is a measure of responsibility.

On February 21, the National Cleaners Association marks 80 years of service to the professional garment care industry.

Through economic shifts, regulatory changes, evolving fabrics, and changing consumer expectations, NCA has remained committed to steadiness, credibility, and practical guidance.

In today’s environment, that role matters more than ever. The industry is moving faster. Regulations are more complex. Owners face higher risk with less margin for error.

An association’s value is not how loudly it speaks, but how reliably it supports.

As we enter our 80th year, our commitment remains clear: provide structure, perspective, and dependable support for professional cleaners navigating what comes next.

Did you happen to miss the February Bulletin?

This month’s issue focuses on one practical goal: reducing daily interruptions and confusion before spring volume arrives. Every article is designed to help you operate more calmly, document more consistently, and avoid avoidable compliance surprises.

Inside the February bulletin, you’ll find:

• Confidence-based marketing guidance for winter garments

• A practical Tool of the Month showing how AI can reduce repetitive questions and documentation gaps

• A clear explanation of Right to Know requirements, including what applies federally and what applies in states like New York

• What dry cleaners need to know about OSHA Form 300A and the February–April posting window

• A focused garment care tip on down-filled outerwear

• A technical bulletin on acrylic knitwear and why inspection and heat control matter

• An update on NCA health insurance benefits and why stability is becoming a competitive advantage

This issue is not about adding work. It’s about making the work you already do easier, clearer, and more consistent.

As always, thank you for being part of NCA and for continuing to invest in professionalism across our industry.

Next Week the National Cleaners Association marks 80 years of service to the professional garment care industry.

Eight decades of continuity in any industry requires more than time. It requires discipline, standards, and a willingness to evolve without losing purpose.

Since 1946, NCA has served as a steady presence focused on education, compliance guidance, and industry stewardship. Like the businesses it represents, the association has adapted through regulatory shifts, technological change, and evolving consumer expectations.

In recent years, that evolution has been deliberate.

We have focused on rebuilding internal systems, restoring institutional trust, and aligning our infrastructure with modern operational and regulatory realities. That work now forms the foundation of what we call the SmartCare Era.

The SmartCare Era is not a single initiative. It is an operating framework designed to deliver clarity, consistency, and scalable support to professional cleaners navigating an increasingly complex environment.

This milestone is not about celebration for its own sake. It is about responsibility. It is about ensuring that as the industry moves faster and faces higher expectations, professional garment care businesses are supported by stable systems and credible guidance.

Eighty years. Focused on what comes next.
