Small but powerful. This Apulian black-glaze guttus with a Medusa head comes from Magna Graecia, circa 350 BC.

It measures 4¾ inches long and 2½ inches high. Its narrow spout was made for careful, measured pouring of oil, perfume or medicinal liquids, a form valued across the Greek world for its precision.

What sets it apart is the moulded Medusa head at its centre, with wide eyes and tangled locks in relief against the lustrous black glaze typical of South Italian fine ware. To the Greeks, the gorgon’s stare was apotropaic: it warded off evil and protected both the vessel’s contents and its owner. That makes this guttus as much a talisman as a household tool.

Vessels like this were common in homes and votive settings throughout Magna Graecia. They were prized for the glossy, mirror-like sheen the region’s skilled black-glaze potters achieved.

Provenance: Ex private New York City collection, acquired in New York City.

Bronze from Rome’s darkest hour. This is an anonymous AE aes grave as of the Roman Republic, circa 215–212 BC, Rome mint.

It was cast during the darkest years of the Second Punic War, shortly after Hannibal’s catastrophic victory at Cannae in 216 BC nearly brought Rome to its knees. Cast the old-fashioned way in heavy bronze, it was part of the emergency currency Rome relied on before the war forced a drastic debasement of its coinage. It is a monumental and historically evocative piece of the Roman Republic’s struggle for survival.

Obverse: Bearded head of Janus on a raised disc.
Reverse: Prow of a galley left, mark of value (I) above.

Size: 47mm
Weight: 85.36 grams

A large set of ancient Egyptian bronze-framed eyes, circa 1000–300 BC, originally from a mummy mask.

Each eye has a bronze frame and limestone inlays with the centres painted black, and each is paired with a separately cast bronze brow. The eyes measure 2.5 inches long and the eyebrows 3.25 inches, with a strong overall patina.

Composite eye inlays like these were a hallmark of fine Egyptian funerary masks. They gave the deceased a lifelike, ever-watchful gaze in the afterlife, which was central to ancient Egyptian beliefs about identity and resurrection.

Mount: Custom mounted together on a plexiglass stand.

Provenance: Ex private museum collection, acquired from the Archaeological Center, Tel Aviv, Israel.

A core-formed glass amphoriskos, Eastern Mediterranean, Phoenicia, circa 5th century BC.

Standing 5 inches high and 1¾ inches across at its widest point, this miniature amphora has marvered drapery decoration in light blue, white and oxidized red-brown. It rests on a k**b foot and is fitted with opposing solid yellow glass handles, a very unusual and striking colour combination for the type. Centuries before glassblowing, vessels like this were built by trailing threads of molten glass around a removable core. The threads were then marvered, or rolled, into the surface to create these vivid patterns. The technique is closely linked to Phoenician glassmakers, whose maritime trade carried these small perfume and oil flasks across the ancient Mediterranean.

Condition: Both handles have been reattached, and the handles themselves are ancient replacements from a different vessel. Mounted on an old custom blue-sided block base.

Provenance: Ex private New York City collection, acquired at Bonhams, London, approximately 30 years ago. Ex Arte Primitivo, lot 521.
