With a heavy heart I am putting away the sundresses till spring. 😥

I would live in them if I could and mark the calendar by the first time and last time I wear them in a year.

Do you have a seasonal clothing item that you feel the same about?

New paint colors took this Portland foursquare from drab and heavy to bright and perky.

This is a great example of how light vs dark trim changes the personality of the house.

In the before photo the house looks like it’s sinking into the ground.
The new blue body color is slightly darker than the old one, but with white trim the home looks lifted, brighter and friendlier. ✨🏡✨

There are lots of computer programs that you can make layouts with, but I prefer playing with old-school paper and tiny swatches.

Its a satisfying puzzle to layout a four color scheme without repeating the same color in any direction.

Did you know that color trend cycles are typically around ten years long? In the 2000’s we had Tuscan, 20-teens we had gray domination, and now we are warming up with another earth tone trend and taupe as the preferred neutral.

This is a great time to be painting with trend cycles in mind, because interiors and exteriors are also painted every ten years on average.

One of this weeks projects was a commercial exterior. It was a bit of a challenge because of the earthy orange stone and not-earthy gray roof.

The refresh with cream and taupe adds much needed contrast and will look current for the next decade. ✨✨

I really dig unexpected color placement, like here in the box beams.
We kept it neutral on the main floor of this home except for this green-gray-blue, resulting in a palette that gives the new homeowners lots of flexibility when choosing furnishings while showing off one of the home’s best features. ✨✨✨

The other day I happened upon this vintage Mini (short for minuscule, I think? 🤔😆). So darn cute it made me smile just looking at it.
The owner encouraged me to try out the drivers seat. I’m thinking it would be a good Colormoxie mobile, don’t you agree? 🌈🚙

Exterior season is poppin’ here in Portland!

This palette is for a 100 year old home with lots of details. It is a delicate balance on historic homes when deciding what to highlight and what to simplify. Taking every opportunity to add interest when a home has ornate stacked trim, columns, corbels and a wide front porch can lead to a busy, cluttered look.

When I meet with homeowners we begin by defining the mood they want to create with color. It’s a bit like starting with a color mission statement. This couple described what they want as “rich yet not dark/heavy, layered, uncluttered and classic with a dash of spunk.” Understated smokey green-blue with a dash of funky gold deliver just the personality they were looking for. ✨✨

Dark and moody exterior colors, however? I could never be weary of those. A bold, rich color turns an average home into one with personality and confidence. Here, one of my favorite colors, Dark Pewter is paired with a saucy orange front door. The contrast of warm and cool, sophisticated and playful makes for a dynamic street presence.

If your house is ready for a color-mood shift, lets create one that makes you smile every time you arrive home. ✨🏠✨

Are you stumped over a wood stain color? There’s a consultant for that! 🤓 Colormoxie helps select stain colors, too.

Yesterday I met with Mary Lu who was in a stain quandary. We game-planned her primary bedroom and bathroom remodel in the MCM home she and her husband built in 1953. She had found a granite she fell in love with that has lots of mossy green tones and chose off-white tile for the shower. The vanity will be custom made and she was stumped about which stain color to use. Because the values in all the other surfaces are light, we need the wood to add contrast and visual weight to keep the room from looking washed out or bland.

This is an opportunity for one of my favorite woods, walnut. 😍 Natural walnut is a beautifully balanced soft brown that doesn’t lean red or yellow. Since it’s perfect as it is, we don’t need a stain, just a clear coat. The second image shows an example I found for her to show the cabinet maker. We want him to select wood with a uniform, clear grain to pair with the more visually busy granite.

Finally, for wall colors we selected a pale gray green for the bathroom to keep the space airy and light. For the bedroom we chose two options a step darker for coziness. Mary Lu will test both to see which appeals to her the most.

Once finished, the primary suite will be a restful sanctuary that fits seamlessly within her mid-century style home.

I’ve been thinking about energy a lot lately. Like the ‘woo-woo’ kind. ✨✨

I heard recently that having clutter in your home is a constant slow-drip drain of our energy. Maybe that’s obvious to everyone already, but it made me realize that my to-do piles and unfinished house projects are siphoning off my energy every day. With that in mind and a boost from longer days with spring coming, I’ve been tackling things with fresh determination. Not only are the finished tasks no longer draining me, I get a hit of dopamine every time I look at that area.

Similarly, living in colors that feel drab, oppressive or incongruent with our personality is a constant energy drain. Or even worse, deciding to repaint and then getting bogged down in samples that you look at for months, like in these photos. Indecision has been found to drain the glucose (energy) in your brain constantly until the issue is resolved. This homeowner was ready to just paint any color to cover these test swatches so she could move on. Fortunately she reached out to me so we could chose a color she loves to live in. We also chose a palette for the whole house so that when she is ready to tackle the next room she doesn’t get bogged down again in swatch purgatory.

Walking through your home feeling uplifted vs bogged down is a feeling everyone should get to have. If you are weighed down by your walls, reach out so we can make a plan that gives you good house juju. ✨🏠✨
