Are you stumped over a wood stain color? There’s a consultant for that! 🤓 Colormoxie helps select stain colors, too.
Yesterday I met with Mary Lu who was in a stain quandary. We game-planned her primary bedroom and bathroom remodel in the MCM home she and her husband built in 1953. She had found a granite she fell in love with that has lots of mossy green tones and chose off-white tile for the shower. The vanity will be custom made and she was stumped about which stain color to use. Because the values in all the other surfaces are light, we need the wood to add contrast and visual weight to keep the room from looking washed out or bland.
This is an opportunity for one of my favorite woods, walnut. 😍 Natural walnut is a beautifully balanced soft brown that doesn’t lean red or yellow. Since it’s perfect as it is, we don’t need a stain, just a clear coat. The second image shows an example I found for her to show the cabinet maker. We want him to select wood with a uniform, clear grain to pair with the more visually busy granite.
Finally, for wall colors we selected a pale gray green for the bathroom to keep the space airy and light. For the bedroom we chose two options a step darker for coziness. Mary Lu will test both to see which appeals to her the most.
Once finished, the primary suite will be a restful sanctuary that fits seamlessly within her mid-century style home.
